"Oh and as for a question, i was just wondering about opportunities available to you when you’ve finished the course, will that depend entirely on what you’ve shown interest in and the grades you’ve achieved/reputation earned e.t.c? I’m just currently worried that when i finish the course il be standing thinking where do i take it from here? Its sort of an industry that might not have obvious paths layered out. Do you receive help on this whilst your on the course."

Honestly there isn't much out there as far as job placement. It's not like they say there are these jobs available go apply and see what happens. Unfortunately in the movie business it is all about who you know. My best advise if you don't know anyone is buddy up with kids in your class who have money. I know it sounds shallow but these are the type of people who can either fund an Indy on their own or find people who can fund it for them. The truth is if you can create a good Indy film and get it shown at an Indy festival you have a shot. It sounds a lot harder than it is. I am telling you getting into those Indy festivals is not difficult. Coming up with $250,000 for a good Indy film is nearly impossible. I will tell you what if you need some movie ideas I will be willing to work with you on them.

wow. from the sound of it, its easier to become an overnight acting sensation! who knew? (well. you guys, of course. )

lol im not sure i actually like the list of outcomes. It all seems too based on luck to be honest lol. A potential best director of all time has probbaly passed us by because th poor kid couldnt afford to gain himself oppertunities. Very irritating

Anyway, i think in most cases your best to tread on top of the fence as appose to one side of it. Theres a big media ellement/ graphics design ellement to all the final cut studio 2 stuff .... you dont have to become a director out of all this

yeah, movie career is so interesting, but sure not easy to get. Besides competitive, it depends on where your destination is. US? Europe? Asia? Opportunities are different in each country.

Just call all the productioncompanies and try to get work as an assistent.....That is my opinion. If you know a bit more...then go to a school...

All good people are asleep and dreaming.
Is anybody else interested in a possible career in movie production?

I was just browsing a few sites looking for degree courses and found this "Two-year intensive BA in filmmaking" on "Link

I think it looks pretty sweet and unlike most idiotic drama courses available to me here in Northern Ireland it appreciated the inclusion of graphics design and CGI animation and editing into film studies. Over here your only root into production is theatre.

Just curious who else is going to be directing the next Hollywood horror with me?
Can I do this part time, in the comfort of my own home?

How things can change in two years, I hesitate to tell you guys.

Anyway, to answer your question Loner. There are many online courses you can complete within the comfort of your own home and at the pace, style and methodology of your choosing.

My mates currently doing one, the company he's learning with are sending him all kinds of funky resources and libraries of videos and sounds with lesson files, it all seems to be working well for him. Hes training to become a video editor. He's even plucked up the courage to take on some local jobs in an attempt to build up a portfolio.

Its funny now that im two years wiser and have experienced this crap personally I realise theres some truth in what doubters and the realists have been saying. Its the only career path for me and in that respect I don't regret any of my choices. But its something you have to think carefully about before embarking on.

I have done some local modeling and also two commercials and right now have been talking with my parents and my local agent about getting a much bigger national agent and moving to the Los Angelas area. It is a decision that is really tough for me as this is something I wanted for a long time and I know there are more opportunities out west, but I am in my last two years of high school and all my friends are here and also my dad would not be able to leave his current job to fly across country to be with me and my mom. So needless to say it is a hard decision.

lol yeah, id love to offer you some advice, but thats a very difficult and personal decision for you to have to make.

I don't have the same issues personally, Il always love and miss my Mum and my Sister but I like to think they understand what im trying to do, they understand that if the 99.9% scenario of me failing miserably occurs, ive lived and loved trying. Unfortuantely at the price of being away from them. So their happy to have me bail off to London and im one of those people who has always enjoyed the company of friends but never been over reliant on them.

But ive always personally believed girls are closer to their mates than guys (in general). Big step for ya, I hope you bite that bullet and all your dreams come true.

Thank You so much for your words of encouragement. My local agent has set a meeting for me and my mom to meet with an agent from the L.A. area to discuss my options and schooling and living arrangements if that is what we try. My agent now says I could get modeling jobs right now in the teen market out in L.A. and with some work could be auditioning for roles in a year or so. It is all so scary to me.

From the sounds of things, your agent has a lot of faith in you, which is certainly a good thing. I wish you well with your meetings, be sure to extract absolutely everything you need to ensure your well being and safety are in mind.

I imagine youl probably excel having made several sacrifices just to be in a better suited geographical position. You wont take anything for-granted as possibly many of the girls born and raised in Cali will.

Imagine a situation where you get paid to do what you love doing, something you feel motivated and passionate about. Gotta be the dream.

For what its worth you have one fan rooting for you 6000 miles away in the U.K and im sure many more on MoFo

It's all in the reflexes.

+ rep, that's the best thing you can do i wish i thought about that when i was a little bit younger. What's that saying? "If you find a job you enjoy, you'll never work a day in your life".

28 days...6 hours...42 minutes...12 seconds
My aunt got my a little plastic sign that has that exact saying.

I'm hoping to get into it. I wanted to be an actress when I was younger, but took some classes...I have stage fright so tried writing and directing which was much better. It's funny, I have no problem telling people what to do or commanding a group of people or just working with individuals, but once it becomes a performance...I just can't do it. What's even more funny is in high school I was used student art projects all the time as a model, even looked into modeling. Currently though, I'm 5'4" at about 130 pounds with an hourglass figure which is NOT a model body

So it looks like I'll be going to film school, a directing program along with some writing workshops. Move to Hollywood, and hope for the best. And if that doesn't work out hopefully move out of the states to Canada or Europe and pick up a little gig working with a local theatre and move on. Even if I make it to the Sundance festival I would be happy...at this point...

I remember interviews for film schools were they asked individuals to specify a field of specialism (Directing, Editing, Writing, Producing, Cinematography). 18 of the 22 chose directing. Dont be scared to focus more so on your writing initially, youl pick up directing skills in time through being directly involved with the production process and other activities on set.

I remain convinced that no one can teach how to direct in an academic atmosphere, you learn through watching others and personally evaluating their methods, in my experience normally concluding with "Id have done that differently". Good writing practices however can be taught (to a certain point). Be sure you get the most out of your time at film school.

What's the rush? Can't you wait until you finish high school?

Sorry Harmonica.......I got to stay here.
I think it's easier now than ever for starting filmmakers to get creative stuff out there. With a camcorder and a PC you can throw it up on youtube and get an audience. It doesn't take thousands of dollars, just passion, creativity a few common tools, and you've got the wherewithall to do it.

Debatable opinion to be honest, its create a karaoke situation whereby anyone can stand up and have a crack at singing. Of course it doesn't mean anyones going to be any good, so at very least it causes a large influx of rubbish for you to have to compete with. Its not unheard of for a good film to be overlooked.

Anyway, the older generation are constantly preaching to me that the youth have opportunities in film that they didn't have back in the day and while thats partially true, I firmly believe that all the old distinctions still exist as ever. Im grateful because, as one of the "poor men" I can edit digitally on a £2000 machine (for example), I couldn't have done that 20 years ago. But don't try to tell me that someone with more money isn't at an advantage in any of the film making processes.

Like I said before, im trying this, and I dont want to discourage anyone else from doing so. Just don't be surprised when you have to work harder and with less when the competition has more money.

you cant put a price tag on creativity and talent I guess.
