The 800 dollar price tag is with no service and no contract. It's not available on any network, so you have to buy the phone at retail. Most phones cost about 3-4 times the price of a service price because networks will eat the cost of a phone to lock you into a 2 year plan which makes them more money.

It's no more than other phones at their retail price. Go into a Verizon Wireless or AT&T store and look at the retail prices on their phones, especially their top end models. They're going to be in the 400-800 dollar range, and that's because you're paying for the equipment yourself. These cheap prices that the carriers give you is because they're paying for the phone. I don't see how difficult that is to understand.

I paid a little under 100 dollars for my phone, and its a great phone. that 800 dollar nonsense is unnecessary. my phone for what i paid does all i need to do.

OK people, how hard is it to read what I'm saying? All phones are expensive. Those dirty cheap ones that do the bare necessities cost anywhere from 100-200 dollars retail. I'll say this one more time; retail price is expensive. When you sign up for a contract with a carrier they eat the price of the phone, or a large portion of it, so they can lock you into a one year or two year agreement. You're not paying for the phone. They are.

yes, prices for that iphone and the blackberry with all those excess keyboard and gps and all that excess crap...yes thats expensive. i signed up for a family plan with perfect pricing plans.

and bare necessities????? no. my phone has what you'd call "normal" necessities. i have a Motorola W490 and reliable Tmobile service with everything i need.

Gheesh, I'm just a copper for crying out loud, I can't afford to give 800 bucks for a phone...

I paid 100 bucks for mine without a contract...

1) A thing costs exactly what you pay for it. No more, no less.
2) If you want a cell phone, you're probably going to be needing cell phone service.$100, or even $160 is a far cry from $800. As is the $80 MSRP of my perfectly functional phone. Which can be had for like $20 these days if you know where to look.Yes we understand this. But this fact can only be relevant to this discussion if it applies to the phone in question. No, it's not a far cry because the phones are not comparable. If you had a phone that did the exact same thing with all the exact same technology for 80-160 bucks, then this would be a different story. Do you?

Yes, it is 100% relevant. Everyone is going crazy about how a phone could cost 800 bucks when I'm telling you why it costs 800 bucks. That's the retail price. There's no carrier there to eat the phone price for you. Hence the 800 dollar price tag. I don't see how this is not relevant.
