Direct to DVD animated Super Hero movies tend to get glossed over quite a bit, and for good reason. Most are average or poor however I've seen three very good ones.

Superman vs Elite (2012)
Wonder Woman (2009)
Doctor Strange (2007)

Three recent movies that have been glossed over but are worth checking out

The Peanuts Movie (2015)
Kubo and the Two Strings (2016)
Tower (2016)

And four other more traditional films worth seeking out

Wizards (1977) - This is a fantasy epic from Europe
The Secret of Nimh (1982) - a very dark Disney style film
Porco Rossi (1992) - an Asian fairy tale from Hayao Miyazaki
Paprika (2006) - A trippy Matrix/Inception style film

Western Animation already receives enormous attention compared to their rather small volume of output. The US only makes a dozen animated movies per year compared to 750 live action ones and people talk way more on average about each US animated movie than each US live action movie.
