Round 2

1. The Gutter Twins - The Stations
Mark Lanegan. What more needs to be said? People get your ears checked out. NOW! I always hate putting my picks first in these lists (unless it's Bowie), but I've been obsessed with Lanegan's voice for the last quarter of 2020. Then I tripped into The Gutter Twins with their "All Misery/Flowers" track and was elated. It took a while to decide which of these two tracks to post here, but erred on the side of caution feeling that "The Stations" might be more approachable all around. The strings are borderline overdone for me, but the song is solid.

2. MIEN - Earth Moon
oooo groovy. I'm digging this a lot. It's like the smoothest best of Sky Cries Mary and Autolux. I can get into this. And it's actually building. I enjoyed Woodkid, but gotta bump this one up above it for the variety of it all.

3. Woodkid - Run Boy Run
Woo just a few seconds into this one and I'm already overwhelmed. Video takes this sound to the next level. It's as if Morrissey and that guy from Alt-J were caught up into a single teleport stream on the Starship Enterprise, then convinced Hans Zimmer to write a percussive pattern for a pop song, all to be directed by Tim Burton's imagination but with someone else's restraint. Huh. Totally listening to the next track that's loading now.

4. Sky Pig - The Strain
Decent sound all around. I even like the vocals. Just takes too long to get there, and the wall of reverb feels dated. No idea when this came out though. Woah. 2020? Did not expect that. All in all though, it's pretty good. I think shave about 3 minutes off to tighten this up and I feel it'd have a similar energy to "War Pigs." Hm. War Pig? Sky Pig? Is there a relation?

5. Marshmello & Halsey - Be Kind
Not a fan of the genre, but dang if I can't take my eyes off the video =x That said, Choreography feels plucked from Sia's "Chandelier" (excellent vid, btw. nearly brings tears to my eyes/ears watching and listening to that one). Sorry. Gotta pause this ranking to finish listening to "Chandelier."

6. Don Williams - My Heart To You
Good country. Just never much of a fan so other tracks will usually take higher billings with me. (sorry!)

7. Jaime Wyatt - Wishing Well
This is right there at my border of country. Pretty good all around, but that classic voice-cracking is a bit much in the first verse. Melody reminds me of something but I can't place it. I'm thinking Emmylou Harris maybe. Maybe Aoife O'Donovan. Hate I can't find it...

8. Linkin Park - Bleed It Out
Linkin Park is the devil! But at least Fred Durst is the devil's pool boy.

p.s. I hate Morrissey tho

That elusive hide-and-seek cow is at it again
R3 Nommers:
Duran Duran - The Reflex

There WAS a theme, but had to throw this in, totally screwing up that concept (brilliant that it was, though). Anyway. Listen to this bridge at least, and I dare ANY of you to convince me Mike Patton wasn't the original vocalist à la the Milli Vanilli scandal. You can't. Cuz he was. LISTEN!

yay. this day can END now!

Ok, time's up again, sadly no votes from Derek this time but as always on we go....

1st - Don Williams - My Heart To You (42 pts)

2nd - Sky Pig - The Strain (37 pts)
3rd - The Gutter Twins - The Stations (35 pts)
4th - MIEN - Earth Moon (34 pts)
5th - Jaime Wyatt - Wishing Well (33 pts)
6th - Woodkid - Run Boy Run (32 pts)
7th - Marshmello & Halsey - Be Kind (22 pts)
8th - Linkin Park - Bleed It Out (17 pts)

Grats to Gbg on getting the second tune through to the Final

Round three up shortly...

Sadly both Derek Vinyard and CaptainT take a break, hopefully they might rejoin at some point. Sedai and Skepsis93 both join in the fun though while honeykid, Captain Spaulding and pahaK all rejoin after a brief hiatus

@ynwtf - The Reflex video won't play here, presumably the OMV is an acceptable alternative for those of us that might need it?
Let me know if you'd prefer a different alternative.

Feels a bit rude to put my pick at #1 but nothing surpassed it

1. Neil Young - Unknown Legend

So NOT a Patton fan. Got it.
I wouldn't say that. For instance I own three of these:

and a pair of these:

1. Chris Brown ft. Young Thug - Go Crazy
2. Neil Young - Unknown Legend
3. Dool - Wolf Moon
4. Yola - Faraway Look
5. Led Zeppelin - The Battle of Evermore
6. Meg Myers - Running Up That Hill

A system of cells interlinked
1 Dool - Wolf Moon - Top tune in this round, for sure. Will check out more of their stuff asap.
2 Meg Myers - Running Up That Hill - As we all know, I love me some Meg Myers...
3 Pete International Airport - Flowers of Evil - Another really strong entry. Had not heard before.
4 Duran Duran - The Reflex - Classic 80s stuff...
5 Led Zeppelin - The Battle of Evermore - I would normally push Zep right to the top, but the vocals in this tune have always set my teeth on edge.
6 The KLF - America: What Time Is Love? - I like some of their other music more.
7 Neil Young - Unknown Legend - One of the better tunes from this artist.
8 Young Marble Giants - Choco Loni - Kind of hypnotic, but ended just as it was starting to get going.
9 Harry Connick Jr. - A Wink And A Smile - Not my style.
10 Yola - Faraway Look - Great pipes, but not my thing.
11 Chris Brown ft. Young Thug - Go Crazy - A miss for me...

round 4 nom:

Led Zeppelin - Moby Dick

I don't usually nominate the same artist back-to-back like this. I'm in the middle of a massive revisiting of Zeppelin's discography to see how I feel about them ten years after the first time I got into them, so they are currently what's occupying my music brain. This song is very different from the previous Zep song I nominated.
