The MoFo Top 100 of the 60s: Countdown

My three favourite first time watches were Le Samourai, Army of Shadows and Harakiri I had them at #5, 6 and 7. They are all now favourites of mine.
The first two of those remained on my get to list unfortunately. The latter I thought was really good, especially the visuals. There is something about most Samurai movies that continues to leave me a bit cold though, even the very good ones. This was my favorite of the handful I have watched since arriving at MoFo though.

I had Psycho at number 1, so of course I was pulling for it to claim the top spot. 2001 isn't a bad choice at all though, I had it at number 4.

Here is my full list:

23. The Magnificent Seven (Shocked this didn't make the list also, very popular Western)
24. Easy Rider (38)
25. Major Dundee (Didn't make it, wasn't surprised though)

Apparently I screwed up my numbers while we were going along with the countdown, a total of 20 films I voted for appeared on the countdown.

Great job Daniel. Didn't keep up with this list as much as I might have done in the past, but I enjoyed popping in and keeping up to date with the progress.

Here's my list, a little disappointed my two lesser-seen Hepburns and solitary Allen didn't make it, but 22/25 is very pleasing.

Very well done Daniel! We very much appreciate all your hard work
I'm poring over your spreadsheet now, its really interesting.

This was my list :

1. Midnight Cowboy
2. Salvatore Giuliano
3. Oliver!
4. Cool Hand Luke
5.Mary Poppins
6. Kes
7. A Taste of Honey
8. To Kill a Mockingbird
9. A Hard Days Night
10. Jungle Book
11. West Side Story
12. The Italian Job
13, The Night of the Living Dead
14. A Man for All Seasons
15. The Haunting
16. The Innocents
17. Le Trou
18 Harakiri
19. Dr No
20. Yojimbo
21. Village of the Damned
22. Le Samourai
23. Help!
24. Fail Safe
25. Belle de Jour

I gave my second highest place to Salvatore Giuliano by Francesco Rosi, a director who I hear very little about on these boards. I keep intending to see more of his films and must get round to it. I was the only person voting for this film so it ended up as number 207.

My 6th place went to Kes, and I'm miffed it didn't break the top 100 and only came in at number 125 - it's a travesty!. Four of us voted for it, so at least 4 people were right!

My number 14. A Man For All Seasons I thought might've made higher than 110. It's a favourite era of history of mine and has an excellent cast. Again 4 people voted for it.

I'm very surprised Dr No didn't come higher than 124.

A long time favourite is Village of the Damned which ended up at 148 with 5 of us voting for it. Who put it at their number 5? Good work that person!

and finally Help!, well I pretty much knew I'd be the only person voting for that but it has sentimental value so number 376 was probably about right!

So...I want to know who was that person who voted in Sword of Doom as their number 5 - the only person to vote for it? It's a cracking film and one I would've included had I remembered it.

Save the Texas Prairie Chicken
I had Take The Money and Run at #12 Skepsis. Think it may have just been us two.
Well, I believe it is in my top 30 (I don't think I ended up placing it beyond that point - I will have to look later). I really do wish I would've decided to keep it on, though. It would've been nice to see it possibly make an appearance here.

I watched my first ever Charlie Brown thing the other day. Merry Christmas Charlie Brown to cross it off the Animated list. I honestly would have loved those as a kid but never seen them on TV or anything.
I love Charlie Brown. Honestly? Since I now know that people voted for "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", I should've included that Charlie Brown that you just watched on my list. I think it is the best Christmas special (well, next to "Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer" ).

Looks like 2001: a Space Odyssey benefited from an eye-popping 19.9 points per list it appeared on (1,092 points from 55 ballots). So it averaged top 5 when it was voted for. Meaning either you REALLY love it, or it doesn't make your list. While Psycho appeared on more lists but didn't average as high a placement.

Psycho's almost too perfect a horror movie. Based on the story of real-life wacko Ed Gein, and Robert Bloch's novel, Psycho. Adapted by a legendary director and with a seasoned cast starring Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins. A horror movie purist cinephiles can actually get away with praising, with its Academy-nominated cast and crew. Find myself charmed most by the films it inspired... with far more amateur casts, such as Black Christmas (1974), Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), Halloween (1978), The Burning (1981), & Nightmare on Elm St (1984). Still, the only criticism i can come up with for Psycho is that it's too good. Had it #8 on my entry.
