I'm pleased there's been interest and thanks for the kind comments. I wanted a properly international selection so lots of decent films in English just missed out.

Uconjack: excellent suggestions all round- some came very close, a few i overlooked by mistake, and though i really like Broadway Danny Rose i wasn't quite sure whether it should be included. Gunga Din may be a bit dated now, The Stranger is lesser Welles i think, and Hoosiers and Heartbreak Kid didn't occur to me at all. I've tried to be (mainly) objective so couldn't really leave out Titanic and most others you're not keen on. And i've had a soft spot for El Cid since first seeing it aged 13. It made a big impression on me then, and i still prefer it to both Spartacus and Ben Hur.

Piddzilla: i'm from Wales but my heart is in Japan. I love the films of Kenji Mizoguchi, and the tales of Kenji Miyazawa (and the prints of Hiroshige, and The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon)

Linespalsy; both by Malle you mention came very close. Ditto Herzog's Nosferatu (especially as Isabelle Adjani- very sexy and talented- is in it!). Woman of the Dunes is in there!

Well most of the world's films are not in English, so it's a pity lots of great films aren't seen. Of course they're not all arthouse intellectual stuff- something for everyone. My favourite film Sansho the Bailiff is pretty accessible; involving, beautiful and moving (i think anyway).
