Overlooked by Oscar

Tools

My life isn't written very well.
I just recieved the newest issue of Entertainment Weekly in the mail. For those of you familiar with the mag, you know its quality and content. For those of you who don't, it's a weekly magazine with reviews of movies, music, books etc. They also do stories on actors, and upcoming movies.

Anyway in this weeks issue they have a story called, "Overlooked, the 100 Greatest Performances Ignored by Oscar."

I thought I'd give y'all a taste of just the top 10 they think were Oscar(insert copyright here) worthy, but never considered.

10. Dennis Hopper--Blue Velvet

9. Marilyn Monroe--Some Like It Hot

8. Judy Garland--The Wizard of OZ

7. John Cazale--The Godfather pt. 2

6. Susan Sarandon--Bull Durham

5. Samuel Jackson--Jungle Fever

4. Ingrid Bergman--Casablanca

3. Cary Grant--Philadelphia Story

2. Anthony Perkins--Psycho

1. Jimmy Stewart--Vertigo

Here's some others down the list: 17) Malcolm Mcdowell--A Clockwork Orange. 30) Morgan Freeman--Glory. 31) Jack Nicholson--The Shining. 41) Sean Penn--Fast Times at Ridgemont High. 80) Eric Roberts--Star 80. 91) Divine--Hairspray. 100) Molly Ringwald--Sixteen Candles.

Do you have your own choices of Oscar snubs?

Dennis Hopper was nominated that year though, for Hoosiers. He was recognized for both roles by The Golden Globes, who gave him a nods as Best Supporting Actor for both the psychotic in Blue Velvet and the alcoholic in Hoosiers (he lost to Tom Berenger in Platoon). David Lynch was Oscar nominated as Best Director for Blue Velvet, quite a step for the usually conservative Academy.

OK, the best performances not nominated for Oscars. I'll do a top twenty-five, and I'd go with...

1. Bjork, Dancer in the Dark (2000)
2. Forest Whitaker, Bird (1988)
3. Klaus Kinski, Aguirre: Wrath of God (1972)
4. Jeff Bridges, Fearless (1993)
5. Anthony Perkins, Psycho (1960)
6. Sigourney Weaver, Death & the Maiden (1994)
7. Susannah York, Images (1973)
8. Takashi Shimura, Ikiru (1952)
9. Ingrid Bergman, Gaslight (1940)
10. Jason Robards, A Thousand Clowns (1965)
11. Philip Baker Hall, Secret Honor (1984)
12. Humphrey Bogart, In a Lonely Place (1950)
13. Gene Hackman, The Conversation (1974)
14. Connie Marchand, Cleo from 5 to 7 (1962)
15. Orson Welles, Chimes at Midnight (1966)
16. Al Pacino, Scarecrow (1973)
17. Jason Robards, The Ballad of Cable Houge (1970)
18. Claire Bloom, Look Back in Anger (1958)
19. Harrison Ford, The Mosquito Coast (1986)
20. Nicole Kidman, To Die For (1995)
21. Jessica Walter, Play Misty for Me (1971)
22. Ralph Richardson, The Fallen Idol (1948)
23. Tim Robbins, Jacob's Ladder (1990)
24. Guy Pearce, Memento (2001)
25. Warren Oates, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974)

Don't know how many of those besides Tony Perkins as Norman Bates made the Entertainment Weekly list, but those are my top choices.

I'll give this one a whirl...these are off the top of my head...Some of these were no nominatios, others recieved one but didn't win...

1. Kevin Bacon - "Murder in the first"
2. Jeff Bridges - "fearless"
3. Sylvestor Stallone - "Copland"
4. Matthew Modine - "Full Metal Jacket" + he should have won an Honorary oscar for "And the band played on" but cause it was an HBO film...
5.Harrison Ford - Should have won for "Witness"
6. Mel Gibson - Should have won for "Braveheart"
7. Linda Hamilton - "Terminator 1 or 2" Take ur pic
8. Sigourney Weaver - "Aliens"
9. Al Pacino - "And Justice for all"
10. Daniel Day Lewsi - "The last of the mohicans"
11. Robert Redford - "The Natural"

20. Jim Carrey - "The Truman show"
21. Ethan Hawke - "Gattaca"
22. Dennis Quaid or Jim Caviezel - "Frequency"

27. Robin Williams - "Bicentenneal Man"

The Crudup performance you meant to single out was in Keith Gordon's Waking the Dead (2000) with Jennifer Connelly, not Scorsese's Bringing Out the Dead (1999) with Nic Coppola (which of course Crudup wasn't in at all).

And I think the half dozen of yours that were Oscar-nominated but didn't win are missing the point, that's a different list. You should have gone a little deeper than the top of your head.

Thanks for correcting the Crudup thing..I always seem to do that with those two films...

As far as a seperate list for the ones that were nominated...thats fair...The other choices were however, thought through and accurate...

10. Dennis Hopper--Blue Velvet
I agree with this one...it's a brilliant performance. Ironically he was nominated the same year for a different film.

9. Marilyn Monroe--Some Like It Hot
I think Monroe was better in BUS STOP...I think that performance at least merited a nomination.

8. Judy Garland--The Wizard of OZ
Garland did win a special Oscar, but she definitely should have been in the competitive category, though she didn't stand a chance against Vivien Leigh.

7. John Cazale--The Godfather pt. 2
I think Cazale was better in DOG DAY AFTERNOON

6. Susan Sarandon--Bull Durham
The performance definitely deserved a nomination, I don't know about a win.

5. Samuel Jackson--Jungle Fever
Maybe a nomination, but not a win...he should have won for PULP FICTION

4. Ingrid Bergman--Casablanca
Have never seen this film, but I think her performance in NOTORIOUS is better than all three of her Oscar wins.

3. Cary Grant--Philadelphia Story
I agree...he should have at least been nominated, way better than Stewart IMO, who I think was basically given a consolation prize for being overlooked for MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON

2. Anthony Perkins--Psycho
Perkins not even being nominated was an outrage.

1. Jimmy Stewart--Vertigo
Have never understood all the fuss regarding VERTIGO, but I would have given him an Oscar for ANATOMY OF A MURDER.

For those who missed it and can access it, this years Kermode Awards. I post it here because in order to qualify for a Kermode Award you can't have been nominated by the Academy.
