Do you seriously not know who Jimmy Stewart is?!?!

Really fu*king sad. I'm gonna cry.

i dunno. i reckonise the name. whats he been in? i probably do know him

Oy.

It's a Wonderful Life, Rear Window, Vertigo, Harvey, The Philadelphia Story, Anatomy of a Murder, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington are some of James Stewart's most enduringly popular flicks, but he was in dozens over his long career.

Brad Pitt - 8.5 -Excellent in `Kalifornia`/`Fight Club`/`Seven`/`12 Monkeys`,etc..Can`t really think of a bad performance.
Robert Redford -8.5 -Can`t remember a stinker here either.
Johnny Depp - 8 -Last seen in `From Hell` -Gave his usual rock solid performance.
Sean Penn - 8 - Favourite performance to date is in `U-Turn` (Very underrrated flick I reckon).
Russell Crowe - 8 -Performance as Maximus warrants an 8 for me.
Rober De Niro - 9 -Versatilty par excellence.
Marlon Brando - 7.5 - To be honest, I`ve hardly seen any of his quality younger material.
Matt Damon - 7.5 - Hasn`t put a foot wrong so far I suppose. Was really good in `Good Will Hunting` .
Ben Affleck - 7 - Not a bad actor, but I just don`t like watching him at all.
Jimmy Stewart - 8 - Could watch him any time...no problem.
Tom Hanks - 8 - Similar thoughts to Jimmy Stewart.
Edward Norton - 8 - Classy so far...best of which is easily `American History X` .

Come to think of it...That`s a pretty classy list right there!

I am having a nervous breakdance
Brad Pitt - 5: Decent, not more. Limited.
Robert Redford - 8: He knows (knew) how to do it.
Johnny Depp 7 -: Has developed an own style.
Sean Penn - 7: Is impressing more and more.
Russel Crowe - 6: Guess he plays a stupid rough neck pretty well.
Robert De Niro - 10: Maybe not as good as he used to be. But still one of the best three or four actors ever.
Marlon Brando - 10: Perhaps the best actor of all times.
Matt Damon - 6: Was great in "The Talented Mr Ripley" but otherwise so so.
Ben Affleck - 4: Nothing special at all. Overacting now and then.
Jimmy Stewart - 9: That troubled distracted look is totally his own.
Tom Hanks - 8: Ok, he's corny sometimes but noone can deny the guy can really act.
Edward Norton - 6: A bit uneven. Sometimes good, sometimes embarrasing. Never great.

I am having a nervous breakdance
Clint Eastwood - 8: Owns the screen when he's on it.
Jack Nicholson - 10: One of my own personal favs. So, so, so great!!!
Sean Connery - 10: I don't know if he can act but who cares! There has never been a more charismatic man on the screen than him. And he's still doing it.
Anthony Hopkins - 9: A great craftsman.
Morgan Freeman - 9: Same as above.
Ed Harris - 7: The weakest card in this deck but still a very good actor.
Gene Hackman - 8: Always enjoyable to watch.
Al Pacino - 10: Another one of my personal favs. His and De Niro's "coffe scene" in "Heat" is sparkling. Two of the best, maybe the two best, of that generation AND of all time.

brad pitt: 7 (he picks some good roles, but they all seem fairly similar, at least the ones that i've seen)
robert redford: 6
jonny depp: 7
sean penn: 7
russel crowe: 4
de niro: 10
brando: 9 (even though i havent liked any of his roles for quite some time)
matt damon: n/a (i know the name, but not sure i've seen any movies with him)
ben affleck: 6 (if he's who i think he is. was he in 'wild things?')
jimmy stewart: 9 (the amount of different characters he can play with that classic inflection is impressive.)
tom hanks: 7 (he deserves an 8, but i dont like his movies all that much).
edward norton: 7 (same deal as hanks).

clint eastwood: 9
jack nocholson: 8
sean connery: 6
anthony hopkins: 7
morgan freedman: 8
ed harris: 7
gene hackman: 10
al pacino: 8

and here's some obvious ones you guys left out:
paul newman: 10
dustin hoffman: 10
mel gibson: 3

and my personal favorite:
klaus kinski: 100/10

No, Ben Affleck wasn't in Wild Things. That's Matt Dillon (Drugstore Cowboy, To Die For, There's Something About Mary).

Affleck and Damon co-wrote and co-starred in Good Will Hunting, for which they won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Since then both have become major movie stars. Affleck has starred in Armageddon, Chasing Amy, Shakespeare in Love, Pearl Harbor, Changing Lanes and The Sum of All Fears, and next year he's Daredevil. Damon has starred in Saving Private Ryan, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Rounders, Ocean's Eleven, The Rainmaker and The Bourne Identity. They co-starred together again as the renegade angels in Kevin Smith's Dogma.

Brad Pitt: 8.5
A very impressive actor. Whether good guy or bad, you gotta love 'em.
Robert Redford: 9
A legend. Never counted on his good looks, and made some unforgettable movies.
Johnny Depp: 10
The most versatile actor working today. Respectable because he will take on any character. Won't ever be typecast.
Sean Penn: 9
Carlito's Way, enough said.
Russel Crowe: 7
A gifted actor that has soulful eyes and an amazing depth.
Robert De Niro: 10
One of the greatest actors to ever live.
Marlon Brando: 8.5
A great actor. Too bad he had so few movies. He may have wound up bieng condsidered the greatest.
Matt Damon: 7
A solid performer, will get better with age.
Ben Affleck: 6.5
A good actor, there are plenty in his range.
Jimmy Stewart: 10
There is no need to say anything. I doubt there is anyone who doesn't love 'em.
Tom Hanks: 10
The closest thing this generation has to a Jimmy Stewart.
Edward Norton: 8.5
The guy started his career as an A-List actor, and has yet to disappoint.
Clint Eastwood: 9
Probably in the top 5 for coolest men to grace the silver screen.
Jack Nicholson: 9
How can somebody have the voice and attitude of Jack, and not be considered great?
Sean Connery: 8.5
Too cool for words...
Anthony Hopkins: 10
The closest thing to a Hollywood God there is. But alas, Bad Company was made, undoing his perfect record.
Morgan Freeman: 10
This man should have a few Oscars by now...
Ed Harris: 7.5
A very underrated actor. Always a solid, if not perfect, performance.
Gene Hackman: 10
I find that he is always so good, that I take him for granted.
Al Pacino: 10
see Robert De Niro
Paul Newman: 10
Perhaps the most charismatic actor of all time.
Dustin Hoffman: 10
There isn't one movie of his that I don't love. I'm sure I'll feel that way towards Moonlight Mile also.
Mel Gibson: 9
I can't believe someone scored him at 3. Mel is incredibly talented. See Gallipoli, Signs, and Hamlet, then still score him as a 3.

Wow! Look at all the 10's. Great list! If I could add one more to the list, it would be:

Steve McQueen: 10
He's only the coolest guy who ever lived!

thanks, holden, based on the movies you listed that i've seen, i'd have to give matt damon and ben affleck both 6's

as for mel gibson, slayton: i liked him in gallipoli, liked him even more in 'the year of living dangerously', another weir film. but as per you examples: i'd counter with: braveheart, what women want, and conspiracy theory (this is probably his very lamest performance, not to mention one of the least convincing portrayals i've ever seen of a tormented eccentric.) i think he's one prime example of an actor who has gotten considerably weaker over the last two decades, and didnt start off all that strong to begin with.

looking back at my list, the only things i'd change are moving crowe up to a 7 (romper stomper) and ed norton up to an 8.

that's cause i dont think i've seen anything with him in it. sorry.

and besides: you failed to mention my idol, krazy klaus kinski
