What is this effect called and how do we achieve it?

I need help to find out what this editing effect is called and how to achieve it.

I'm not certain but given that Coppola tried to do it everything in camera, I would guess that he undercranked the camera (slower fps) then speed ramped it to 24 fps and had a flickering light/flare that would impact the exposure levels.



Some of the scene was also filmed to be played backwards, creating that visually surreal feel to it. Most or all of the movie was done with traditional stagecraft rather than digital FX.



I don't know but Raimi was doing the same thing in the Evil Dead flicks.
