Sports Movies

Tools

I went through 'em all and couldn't find a thread about sports movies, so here it is. What is the best sports movie ever?

My vote goes to Slap Shot (1977):

Dunlop: She underlines the f*ck scenes for ya? Jesus, if she underlines the f*ck scenes for ya, she must worship the ground you walk on.
Braden: They teach you how to underline in college.
Dunlop: Not the f*ck scenes, they don't.

Some honorable mentions:

Major League
61*
North Dallas Forty
Field of Dreams
Any Given Sunday
Bull Durham
Mystery, Alaska
Eight Men Out

Worst sports movie ever? Any movie that involves an animal as the best player on the team.

Back with a bang!
Have any of you guys ever played NHL 2002 for PS2?
Sometimes when you score a hat-trick, the commentator says:
"Wow, he scored a hat-trick, that's one goal for every Kevin Costner baseball movie"

I found that very funny

Well, crap. I didn't go back far enough. My sails are suddenly wind-less.

Thanks for the heads-up, Holden!

You know, I always forget that Raging Bull is a sports movie, but it's definitely on my list.

"I heard things."
"What kinda things didya hear?"
"I heard things."

Also these:

The Sandlot
Happy Gilmour
The Bad News Bears
A League of Their Own
Cutting Edge (I even remember the special advance preview they showed during the 1992 Winter Olympics...)
Caddyshack
Space Jam (my kid's favorite sports movie, so it goes on my list)
Tin Cup
Hoop Dreams

But the one I'm most embarrassed about forgetting:

Over the Top--the only movie with the guts to combine the drama of a father-son reconciliation with... arm wrestling.

And Vetinari--I've not yet played NHL 2002, 'cause we don't yet have a PS2... sigh. But that sounds awesome!

My favourite sport is the soccer classic, Escape to Victory or Victory as it is sometimes known.

Escape to Victory is one of the worst films I've ever seen and I love it to bits.

John Huston directs. Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine and a host of soccer legends star as a group of concentration camp inmates who are given one shot to escape by beating the Nazis in a game of football.

It's truly horrible up until the final game. At half time, the Allies are losing but they've found a way to escape underneath their dressing room. A couple of guys start to leave before one of the troops says the immortal line:

"We can still win this".

They don't. They draw. Stallone gets to be the hero by saving a last minute penalty. But the fans rescue them by invading the pitch at the end and carrying them to safety.

Wow--I've never even heard of that one... and Stallone, even. And I've another one to add, and I think it counts because the competition is the center of the plot and, hey, the word "sport" is in the title:

Bloodsport -- the only good movie on Jean-Claude Van Damme's resume.

Escape to Victory is just plain called Victory were I come from and it's in my list.

Victory (1981) is definitely one of John Huston's most embarassing efforts. Formulaic ripoff of The Great Escape meets The Longest Yard. What a frippin' waste of resorces, including Michael Caine and Max Von Sydow. I liked it OK when I was eleven, but then I grew up. It's a groaner. They should have called it Cliche istead of Victory. Ugh.

crazed out movie freak
You totally got to give props to The Program. Really depicts college football life.
Although I really liked Raging Bull just for the mere fact it stars my two favorite actors.(Deniro and Pesci) hopefully I spelled that right.
