My Best Directors for the 1990's

If I had given out the Oscars for Outstanding Achievement in Direction during the 1990's:

1990: Martin Scorsese, Goodfellas

1991: Oliver Stone, JFK

1992: Clint Eastwood, Unforgiven

1993: Steven Spielberg, Schindler's List

1994: Quentin Tarantino, Pulp Fiction

1995: Ron Howard, Apollo 13

1996: Joel Cohen, Fargo

1997: Curtis Hanson, LA Confidential

1998: Peter Weir, The Truman Show

1999: Sam Mendes, American Beauty

1990 Martin Scorsese, Goodfellas
1991 John Singleton, Boyz n the Hood
1992 James Foley, Glengarry Glen Ross
1993 Krzysztof Kieślowski, Three Colors: Blue
1994 Quentin Tarantino, Pulp Fiction
1995 Martin Scorsese, Casino
1996 Joel Coen, Fargo
1997 Paul Thomas Anderson, Boogie Nights
1998 Joel Coen, The Big Lebowski
1999 Paul Thomas Anderson, Magnolia

Not a ton of variety in directors, I've noticed. :P

1990- Martin Scorcese(Goodfellas)
1991- John Singleton(Boyz in Da Hood)

1997- Gus Van Sant(Good Will Hunting)
1998- Tony Kaye(American History X)
1999- Brothers Wachovskis(The Matrix)

I'm not going to base my list on academy sensibilities as they are archaic and biased towards certain types of films.

1992 - Eastwood (Unforgiven)
1993 - Kitano (Sonatine)
1994 - Kar Wai (Chungking Express)
1995 - Mann (Heat)
1996 - Coen (Fargo)
1997 - Anderson (Boogie Nights)
1998 - Malick (The Thin Red Line)
1999 - Fincher (Fight Club)

I've always felt Boyz in the Hood was overrated, but it's hard to argue with Anderson, though I would have picked him for Boogie Nights over Magnolia...I think Boogie Nights is slightly better and has more re-watch appeal.

I think Boyz n the Hood is one of the most powerful and honest films of the 1990s. And yeah, I prefer Boogie Nights to Magnolia but I think he did an amazing job with both.

Nice to see some love for Glengarry Glen Ross...though the film contains some amazing performances (Jack Lemmon is my supporting actor of '92), I never considered the direction a standout element of this film.

I consider Lemmon to be that film's lead, personally. And maybe I'll go with Spike Lee for Malcolm X then.
