I watched Night of the Living Dead when I was a child and I thought it was the scariest movie ever. In college, I watched it again and I found The Ouija Experiment scarier

The Haunting (1963) is probably the most chilling and effective use of pure cinematography to create scares without a drop of blood or any gore-porn in sight.

The Changeling from the 1980's, always thought that was pretty scary when watched in the dark.

New horror movies doesn't scare me. I recommend to watch something older - maybe some of them aren't so scary, but they are interesting.

For example:

Cannibal Holocaust (1980)

The Last Man on Earth (1964)

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Hi

So yeah, I'm looking for a really scary horror movie. At first I thought it would be a pretty easy job as I haven't seen a lot of classics or the newer ones to that matter, but soon I realized that simple googling is not enough.
Most of the top horror movie lists were either full of movies that aren't even horror (gore=/= scary). Or they included classics that are good films, but are not really that scary either . (For example I do not find shining scary at all. It has good scenes and it's a good thriller, but it's not scary)

So what would be your to pick(s) for the scariest horror movie of all time. If you do not count nostalgia factor and know that jump scares are more annoying then scary.
(It doesn't even have to be a good movie if it makes you want to turn the lights on and cuddle with your teddy bear.)

Ps. I'm still learning English so sorry for possible errors.
The Woman in Black has its problems but being scary isn't one of them. It really is brimming with dread whenever the ghost is in evidence. I also think the American remake of The Ring has one of the scariest atmospheres in a horror film.

The only movies that ever truly scared me were The Exorcist, Poltergeist 2 and Pinnochio all when I was very young.
Yeah still this. The Descent unsettled me recently, but not anything to do with the crawlers mostly just the scene when Sarah gets stuck in that hole causing a cave-in and a few other claustrophobic scenes. Didn't scare me though.

I first watched The Exorcist when I was ill with a really bad cold, eating a bowl of tomato soup. Quite funny really. I liked it, especially the 'spider' bit.

I haven't seen the new one yet, but the 1989 version of the Woman in Black is my go to recommendation for something frightening. I know people look at jump scares as a sort of cheap tactic, but there's one particularly effective and memorable one in that film, along with a really chilling atmosphere and story.

There's also a 1992 mockumentary called Ghostwatch. Even though it has a tendency to get pretty silly (especially in the end), the lengthy build up is really creepy, and it left me thinking about it long afterwards.

It's difficult to recommend movies to scare people, since fear is so subjective, but ghost movies (particularly with a low budget feel) are usually what do it for me.

The spider bit was a deleted scene because at the time you could see the wires used, it only got added in the recent releases with the use of CGI. I hate that scene.

Yeah, i think i definitely benifited in seeing The Exorcist at such a young age, i hear a lot of people saying it is funny now but at 7 it terrified me.

That sounds good.

It's a bit like the cutting of the similar 'spider' movement in Alien, which was really effective.

Candy Man is a scary one!
Take my word for it, I am really smart and I have the best taste in movies.
One of my friends called that The Green Mile prequel and it cracked me up.

Yes!! I agree with Sinister, although the ending kinda ruined it for me.

I agree with the other members that say it depends on your personality. i for one do not get scared of gore/slashers,but more like thriller types...but i cant think of any atm!

Wastelands Inhabitant
To find a really scary one is a struggle... the last media that scared me was not even a movie but the demo videogame P.T. on PlayStation4...

I actually consider The Exorcist 3 superior to the original. While it's less graphic it certainly has ample amounts of subtle, psychological horror throughout. William Blatty's The Ninth Configuration is awesome too and contains much of the same cast.

What scares you is entirely subjective and more subjective than the movie medium itself.

Before seeking out so-called scariest horror films, you have to figure out what scares you the most. One might call The Conjuring the scariest movie ever, but another might not believe in ghosts and even find the invisible forces to be funny, which will therefore not make it the suitable scariest horror film for this person.

So find out what scares you and seek out more horror in that department and direction...

I lovvvve the ending of Sinister!!

Don't worry, daddy. I'll make you famous again.
