Really adored the dialogue, cinematography, acting, and direction. Lakeith Stanfield
made this film, and turned an audience surrogate character into so much more through his amazing performance. Also, absolutely loved the twist - for I have not laughed so hard in my entire life (mostly at the surface-level idea of this metaphor being in a major motion picture), and not in a bad way. Pretty ambitious storytelling.
Which brings me to all the themes and symbolism, which all seemed to be blatantly on the noise. What was the overall message here? There were several. But if you had to narrow it down: I'm pretty sure it was anti-capitalist (in a sense).
Also, I don't believe in the notion that you have to discarded your black identity in pursuit of profit. That struggle to get by, anxiously waiting for when your next paycheck comes around: applies to literally everyone who's trying their damnedest to make a living, including myself. I understand that it's an extremely tough world. And poverty passed down through generations shouldn't result in more generations being in poverty, as there's ways to prevent that by getting ahead in life - due to your choices and work ethic. If you still manage to be a screw up despite all that, then I don't know what to tell you. It's definitely not white privilege. There's honestly more of an upper-class privilege if anything (even then, some people screw up in that realm).
I dunno, maybe It's just that I'm not black (even though I grew up with divorced parents, one of which was a sexual deviant/criminal, and the other a clinically-depressed alcoholic with rather low income). Bottom line, I hope it's not telling black people that their own problems are because of white people at the top of the food chain who try to suppress their blackness, while also trying to appropriate it by picking and choosing what they like and don’t like about said culture (I.E; the "n*gga sh*t” scene). Doesn't take away from any of the incredibly competent filmmaking, though. But please movie, continue talking about systematic racism, how we try to make black people white, etc. Just kidding.
>Be film
>Capitalism is evil!
>Rise up against evil oppressive privileged whites!
>Seize the means of production!
>Crush white oppressors with violence!
>That will be $9.50. We hope you enjoy your film and thank you for your business. Refreshments are available. Please turn your phone to silent and enjoy the film!
Haha, just kidding. But I'm not wrong, am I? Just kidding about that too.
Also, Tessa Thompson is my waifu. For I, a lonely incel, have claimed her. And any MoFo willing to take her from me shall face the wrath of my Stormbreaker.
