Hey poil, this isn't really related to Bollywood but I checked your top 10 and all of them were made over the past 3 years... not that theres anything wrong with that, I'm more bias with the modern films also, but you should go see some pre '98 films!

When I lived in San Francisco there was a channel that ran Bollywood stuff Saturday mornings. I couldn't stand to watch even ten minutes at a time, even as a laugh. There's a "Simpsons" episode that has a Bollywood clip on TV or something (an Apu episode to be sure), and it is pretty damn accurate. All the ones I have seen are a horrible combination of "Miami Vice", The King & I, and a Duran Duran video. They've taken the absolute worst bits of Western pop culture and thrown them all together with no sense of purpose other than noise.

Yeah, very much like Moulin Rouge, now that you mention it.

And as for Poil11's list of favorites, the only thing that jumps out for me is Monster Balls - coincidentally my locker room nickname in High School.

There's a possibilty it was supposed to be Monster's Ball (2001), the highly-acclaimed drama starring Billy Bob Thornton and Halle Barry. If not, looks like I'll have to venture into that little room in the back of the video store, probably somewhere on the same shelf as Big Jugs 6 and Wet Stewardess Bikini Party 3, and see if they carry this Monster Balls.

I'd noticed it as well, and was tempted to comment much in the fashion you did, Mista Pike...but I thought better of it. Anyway, I have seen a little bit of what Bollywood churns out...but found it completely uninteresting. I was reminded of it later when some news magazine show (I don't remember which) did a special on Bollywood stars and how they're quite often the targets of attempted murder.

I ain't gettin' in no fryer!
We're men...we're manly men...

I'd almost like to question how Mr. Pike knows some porno titles.

Never heard of Bollywood, from the direction this thread is going...I don't think I want to know.

Time for me to be Holden.

I believe the episode of The Simpsons you refer to Holden, is in fact episode 3F31 -- 138th Episode Spectacular in which host Troy McClure (voiced by Phil Hartman) runs through a clip show like format of outtakes.

One of these such outtakes is from episode 1F10 -- Homer and Apu. The scene consists of Apu showing the family an Indian film in which:

- A woman dances through some willow trees singing.
- A man jumps through a window of a temple.
- The men in the temple look at each other.
- Close of of one of the men having shifty eyes.
- All men get up and dance to ridiculous music.

Apu tells the family "This film made every Indian Critic's Top 400 List".

you know i was waiting for both of those comments, your list doesn't contain anything pre 98, and the correct title is monsters ball.

first of all, there is no way in hell that i can list my top 10 favorite movies of all time. it just isn't possible in my mind. i am no critic of sorts, i love every movie, even if there is one great scene. most movies have this one great scene. those are my 10 most favorite movies at this time and thats how i am going to keep it. the most favorite movies are the movies that i last saw. and i know that most movies are just copies of movies of copy of other movies. and i think that those movies are some pretty influential movies.

secondly, when i went and saw monsters ball at the leamle in hollywood. someone changed the placement of the s and made it monster balls. (btw, the second best movie of the year (monsters ball)).

and lastly you guys are way to serious, try and take a joke sometimes.

Heh heh heh.
I think YOU'VE taken a JOKE a bit SERIOUSLY, not the other way around. They were poitning something out, for all they new it could have been a possible typo. They weren't paying you out.

Don't ever listen to Holden.
He pretends to be smart, but he's really not.

I ain't gettin' in no fryer!
I think it's funny how we have to explain Holden's personality to every new person just so they don't get really pissed at him.

Holden is really just well versed in the way of the movie. Fear not young one, for he sometimes is of use and at other times can be a bit annoying, but don't let him bug ya. We all had to get used to him when he burst onto the scene a few months ago.

Only some.

Thanks, T. I tried my best.

Just gotta say Bollywood is my all time Favourite Genre

hey Dont be so rude with the bollywood movies. i agree some of them are funny and quite annoying but there are several good bollywood films as well. you can see the energy of mumbai in Slumdog millionaire. bollywood actors are being approached by hollywood directors and several indians are also making great hollywood movies. Several good and you mentioned one.

As far as Bollywood filmstars and makers crossing over I can only think of Aishwarya Rai making it.

I can't understand why.

I've seen between 20 and 30 Bollywood films and only liked three.

Salaam Bombay!
Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India
Slumdog Millionaire

Bollywood is one of the largest movie-makers’ centers of the world. Location is Mumbai, former Bombay, which is the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra. Hindi along with Urdu and English on occasions is the principal language of the film produced.
History of the film-making in Bollywood is at present four years less than a century. From the release of the first silent film named ‘Raja Harishchandra’ in 1913 to the busiest present days Bollywood has developed in all respect. As India is a huge country with thousands years of glorious tradition on the back the Indian film industries have been greatly influenced by the great Indian epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata and also by the plays composed in Sanskrit language from the ancient days. Bollywood has received resources from the regional theatrical forms of Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu and from the rich treasure of Hollywood of the contemporary period.
Shyam Bengal to Govind Nihalni of the parallel cinema and Satyajit Ray- Ritwik Ghatak to Aparna Sen of West Bengal have been highly admired by the western audience. ‘Sholay’ may be named among other popular film of Bollywood. Bollywood movies are enriched with beautiful music and wonderful dances and also by real drama and melodrama.
If you are interested I shall suggest you to watch a few of the Bollywood films of our time:
Lagan, Ghajini, Tare Zamin par, A Wednesday, Mumbai Meri Jan, Rang De Basanti, Black, Krish, Wanted ….

Happy New Year from Philly!

As far as Bollywood filmstars and makers crossing over I can only think of Aishwarya Rai making it.

Loner, you and other film enthusiasts are probably more familiar with Bollywood's excellent character actors than you know. Due principally to their cross over into British cinema.

These three faces come easily to mind.

Om Puri works principally in India but has had starring roles in East is East and My Son the Fanatic in the UK and will reprise his role as the dreaded George Khan in West is West soon. He is an Indian citizen but was awarded an OBE for his contribution to British cinema.

Saeed Jaffrey is a mainstay of both British and Indian films. I remember him principally for supporting roles in Ghandi and My Beautiful Laundrette, but his face and roly poly form are ubiquitous.

Roshan Seth, a native of New Delhi, works principally in western films and theater though followers of Indian cinema will remember him in Monsoon Wedding. For anyone who loves comedy, you must see him as the eponymous Buddha of Suburbia, a television adaptation of Hanif Kureishi's book.
