Fun Facts #60
From The Sixth Sense (1999)

Reputedly, Haley Joel Osment got the role of Cole Sear for one of three reasons: First, he was best for it. Second, he was the only boy at auditions who wore a tie. Third, M. Night Shyamalan was surprised when he asked Haley Joel Osment if he read his part. Osment replied, "I read it three times last night." Shyamalan was impressed saying, "Wow, you read your part three times?" To which Osment replied, "No, I read *the script* three times."

Fun Fact #61
From Dial M for Murder (1954)

Filmed in 3D, which explains the prevalence of low-angle shots with lamps and other objects between us and the cast members. There was only a brief original release in 3D, followed by a conventional, "flat" release; The New York Times review mentioned it opened with the "flat" release at the Paramount in New York. The 3D version was reissued in 1980.

Fun Fact #62
From A Perfect Murder (1998)

To calm her and create a certain atmosphere of intimacy before filming the lovemaking scenes, Viggo Mortensen sang a couple of love songs to Gwyneth Paltrow that he learned in Argentina when he was young. In an interview he said, "I don't know if that ended up scaring her instead."

Fun Fact #63
From American Psycho (2000)

Looking for a way to create the character of Patrick Bateman, Christian Bale stumbled onto a Tom Cruise appearance on David Letterman. According to Mary Harron, Bale saw in Cruise "this very intense friendliness with nothing behind the eyes" and Bale subsequently based the character of Bateman on that.

Fun Fact #64
From Versus(2000)

In the scene where Tak Sakaguchi's character holds a pistol in his mouth, the director originally called for him to rack the slide with his teeth. He tried this, and broke a tooth. One of the zombies was played by a dentist, and fixed it for him.

I've read that Cruise comment before. Incredible indirect critique.

"Don't get me wrong, Tom. I was only using you as inspiration!"

Fun Fact #65
From The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Judy Garland's dress and blouse were in reality not white but pale pink. True white did not photograph properly in Technicolor and made the blue of her checked dress seem too bright. Judy Garland also had to wear a painful corset-style device around her torso so that she would appear younger and flat-chested.

Fun Facts #66
From Wall Street (1987)

Daryl Hannah has never seen the film. She said in an interview that the film was a "rough experience" and that she and Director Oliver Stone had an "unhealthy working relationship". While she is now fine with him, at the time of filming she accused Stone of being a misogynist, and as she did not want to relive the experience she chose never to see the film. She states "film is a collaborate medium. Sometimes you hook up with people you don't collaborate well with." Oliver Stone later admitted that everyone involved told him Daryl Hannah was miscast and told him to replace her, but he was too proud. This caused tension on set particularly with Sean Young who wanted the role herself.

Sorry Harmonica.......I got to stay here.
Frank Sinatra was slated to star in Dirty Harry, but had injured his hand in a fight scene in The Manchurian Candidate, and surgery prevented him from taking the role.

That's sort of correct, but misleading.

The Manchurian Candidate was made in 1962, and the Dirty Harry script was bought by Warners in 1970. Sinatra certainly wasn't having a related operation on his hand nearly a decade later that prevented him from making Dirty Harry, or any other movie. The story is that the Manchurian injury left that wrist, broken in the famous karate scene, weaker for the rest of his life, and he didn't relish brandishing the gigantic .44 Magnum in that hand. He played many other gun-wielding characters post-Manchurian, in Westerns, war movies, detective pictures and as cops. But none of them carried a hand-canon like Harry Callahan's trademark weapon. Newman and McQueen both turned down the role subsequently, before Clint became the iconic character.

Time-wise, Temple of Doom is set before Raiders of the Lost Ark in the Indiana Jones series.

Which explains why he's so much more skeptical of the supernatural in that film, and less hesitant to believe it in the other two (what, there are three others? I have no idea what you're talking about).

When they were casting for Terminator the studio suggested OJ Simpson but Cameron didn't like the idea because he didn't think Simpson was believable as a heartless killer.

Miss Vicky's Loyal and Willing Slave
Two classic scenes from Rocky did not actually go as planned, they had to be altered due to either budget constraints or a mistake

- The ice skating scene with Rocky and Adrian was originally to take place in a crowded rink but they didn't have enough money to hire the required extras. As a result the scene was rewritten to have Rocky pay for just the two of them to skate on their own

- When a nervous Rocky visits the arena before the fight he spots that the artist has made a mistake with the large print featuring him. He has mixed up the colours of his trunks. When he mentions it to the promoter he is told it doesn't really matter. This just adds to his determination; he wants to win, he wants to matter.

This scene came as a result of a genuine mistake made by the props department when they were making the large art prints of Rocky and Apollo Creed. The production could not afford to have it rectified

I'm sure 90% of you know this already but Eric Stoltz actually filmed some scenes for Back to the Future as Marty. Their original choice was Michael J Fox but he couldn't break away from Family Ties. So they casted Stoltz but soon realized he was too serious and dramatic for the role. By that time Fox was able to split his time between the two projects so they nabbed their original pick.

Anyone think it would have been as good or as successful with Stoltz? Do you think the plot, script and directing was strong enough to still be as memorable?

Good ones, JayDee. Here's another one from Rocky due to budget constraints. Stallone's father and brother were casted because of the low budget.

Fun Fact #74 (I hope I counted correctly):
Robert De Niro was asked to audition for the role of Sonny in Godfather. Actually, 3,000 others did. Francis Ford Coppola was chosen because he was a young director and the producers knew they could "dictate" to him. Their major concern was his choice of actor. They didn't like Al Pacino to play Michael because they feel he was too tamed. They weren't sure about Marlon Brando either.

Here is a clip of the Al Pacino reading for the part of Sonny.
