If we drift towards war, we could mention The Beast. I have voiced some reservations about it, but even taken with a grain of salt it's still an interesting (and entertaining) movie about the historical roots of modern Afghanistan.

Generation Kill is yet another excellent mini-series about the war in the Middle East. Even though it focuses mostly on the war side, it does get some strong points across about the politics behind it.
