He was a product of his times but was also an extraordinary chess player, able to concentrate on the endgame while at the same time allowing for sacrifices along the way.
The Apartheid regime was caught in a vice between Walter Susulu's stepped up violence and Mandela's firm comittment to negotiation, while at the same time not publically opposing ANC terror tactics. That initself was the master stroke that led to the creation of a new era.
