If I left a movie off it's either because I haven't seen it or didn't like it. If I left a movie on the list but didn't use a (*), that means I don't mind the movie, but I wouldn't care to own it. (*) = Want to own it.

Based on your list, I would make these recommendations:

John Carpenter:
The Thing
In the Mouth of Madness
They Live
Escape from New York

Akira Kurosawa:
Ran
Kagemusha
Red Beard
Yojimbo
Sanjuro
The Hidden Fortress
Throne of Blood
Ikiru
The Idiot
Rashômon
Stray Dog

Sergio Leone:
A Fistful of Dollars
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Once Upon a Time in the West
Once Upon a Time in America

Dark City
Do The Right Thing
Hero
2001: A Space Odyssey
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
North By Northwest

Damn, I could go on forever, so I’ll stop now. Just make sure to at least fill in your LotR trilogy.

Wow, palsy...there are a lot of movies that you and I are polar opposites. That surprises me quite a bit.

Clerks X (what's this? Just plain clerks is ***)
I believe that's a special ten year anniversary edition.

What's the point in buying a whole ass load of movies? Wouldn't it make sense to rent them? How many times can you watch each of those movies? I understand someone buying hard to find movies, but something like Orange County.... Why not save that money and get some kickass surround sound or maybe save up more for a new TV. It just doesn't make sense.

The individual words are jumbled then the spaces are removed. PM the answer to me. First one with the answer wins.

Not a bad collection at all... I can see you are a fan of horror movies.
Overall a very nice collection. You've definitely covered all the basics...
Perhaps, The Last Samurai, to add to your collection, which I enjoyed.
Also, Requiem for a Dream...a movie about drug addcits...it's disturbing but good.
Hero was also a great film.. very visually inticing.

What are they? I'm guessing Reservoir Dogs/American History X?

Keep in mind anything over * is something I like, *** and **** I really like a lot, but everything under **** isn't something I'd buy. Like PimpV2.0 I don't see the point of owning a whole lot of movies unless they're ones I either can't rent, or ones I would watch enough times that it's worth getting them. Especially when, like me, you have a good public library system where you can rent movies for free.

No…I’m not a hater of either of these films, but I’m no huge fan either. I was talking about these:

Return of the Living Dead ****
Freddy VS Jason ***
Ferris Buellers Day Off ****

Army of Darkness **
School of Rock *
Chinatown ***
Godfather ***
Godfather II ***
Taxi Driver ***
Mean Streets **
Goodfellas **
Clockwork Orange ***
Dr Strangelove ***
The Seven Samurai ***

It just amazes me that the top three films either tie or outrank the bottom eleven…I mean Return of the Living Dead is amazing and Goodfellas is merely ok? To each their own, and you know I wouldn’t disparage your tastes…but that just shocks me.

It just amazes me that the top three films either tie or outrank the bottom eleven…I mean Return of the Living Dead is amazing and Goodfellas is merely ok? To each their own, and you know I wouldn’t disparage your tastes…but that just shocks me.
Return of the Living Dead and Ferris Beuler's Day Off are the pinnacles of their respective genres. The notable thing about both of these movies is how they deliberately distinguish themselves in already defined movie worlds and then ambitiously aim to form a dialog with the audience about what it means to be a movie. In doing so they pile on lots of annotative jokes that go a long way with me. I find them both clever and hilarious in their own unique ways.

Goodfellas, on the other hand, is the same old Scorsese world of thugs and actors. It's a stylish and well-made film but it doesn't say anything to me. After two decades of making films (some of them excellent), I expect more from this director. The really depressing thing is, I know people who seem to base their entire personality on the actors in this one movie. Something like Ferris Bueler, in it's goofy way, would push that relationship between the film world and the real world to the center of the narrative, and that's one of the main reasons I'd rate that movie so much higher than Goodfellas.

School of Rock has two things going on and neither one is particularly note worthy. The first is Jack Black. I don't mind his routine but it's not enough to build a movie around, for me. The other thing is this really tired formula where little kids do cute things in front of a camera as an organized group (be it a hockey team, a kindergarten class or a musical group). Didn't elevate Emilio or Arnold's credibility, and I don't think it works any better for Jack.

Anyhow, I've also worked out a ten-scale rating system that's really a modification of the four-star system I generally use, just for cases that cause confusion. *=1,2,3, ** = 4,5,6, *** = 7,8,9, and **** = 10. With that in mind, can you see how I might like Freddy vs. Jason and Clockwork Orange strongly, but still rate one a bit higher than the other? For example Freddy vs. Jason would probably be a 7/10 on that scale whereas Seven Samurai would be a 9/10, but they'd both show up as the same *** on the four-star scale. I really don't like using ratings for just this reason, it's really impossible reducing the qualitative value of something as complex as a movie to a simple fraction. x/4 stars is just a sometimes-helpful shorthand for saying generally whether or not I think a movie is worth recommending or not.

Hope that clarifies what I'm seeing in these films.
