If you pay attention to the "Last Movies" thread, you can see that I've watched hundreds of movies recommended from MOFOs, sometimes from the HOF's, other threads, especially since I've to know the movie tastes of others.. I figure I only can muster a certain amount of movies in a month, so I want to go into it expecting it to be great.

I'm looking for dramas (no mysteries or noir, please). Preferably 1930s-70s. Great writing might be the most important thing. I don't like aristocratic movies or "old english"... Well, here are my favorites -- they aren't all in order, many haven't been rated by me officially, with the exception of a 1-10 score on here, IMDB, etc... I've been here about 3 years, and I've got great recommendations.... Thanks!!

P.S. - Hit CTRL-F to find, much quicker.

Matt, give me a day or two and I'll try to hook you up with some cool recommendations.

By the way I'm thrilled to see "Il Sorpasso " on your list of favourites !

Thank you, much! Isn't that such a fun and great movie?

Matt, that's an impressive list of favorites! You have some of my all time favs on your list.

I know you said no noirs, but I noticed you actually have a lot of noirs on your list. Do you consider noirs to be something else? Or have you just seen enough for now? I ask because that's the genre of films I'm most interested in, so some of my suggestions would be noir.

Do you consider these films from your list noir?

treasure of the sierra madre
ace in the hole
citizen kane
crossfire
touch of evil
casablanca
-the harder they fall
-the desperate hours
caged
the third man
asphalt jungle
key largo
maltese falcon
double indemnity
sweet smell of success
strangers on a train
clash by night (1952)

I know you like well written dramas about the human condition. I have one for you that I highly recommend, as it fits that criteria. Unless you have a problem with Caucasian actors playing Asians in a 70 year old film. Some people do, but I think it's unfair to apply 21st century ethics to film making from 7 decades ago. Anyway it's a powerful film about life, loss, suffering and joy.

The Good Earth 1937

Here are couple of films I thought you'd like. Hopefully I'm not totally off track here. Let me know what you think and if you had seen any of them.

Le Corbeau (1943)
Los Olvidados (1950)
The Search (1948)
Nazarin (1959)
Big Deal on Madonna Street (1958)
We All Loved Each Other So Much (1974)
Life Is Beautiful (1997)
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945)
Skammen (1968)
The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (1974)
Rocco And His Brothers (1960)
The Shop Around The Corner (1940)
Leave Her To Heaven (1945)

If I remember more, I'll add them to the list.

EDIT: And yes, Il Sorpasso is a hell of a film. I was really pleased when you decided to watch it after seeing my rating and ended up loving it.

Harold And Maude

Breathless

Ghost Dog
Maybe I'm wrong but Breathless strikes me as the type of film Matt would hate.

How about a British film, Letter To Brezhnev,1987, it's a good film, made here in Liverpool. It's about 2 young girls who meet 2 Russian sailors on a night out in town.

Yes, I have many, but I've seen too many.. The same with mysteries.. I want genre-less movies if anything. Drama usually covers it, but I've been afraid for a couple of years of running out of great movies, even though I come across at least a few a month.

I'll put "The Good Earth" on my list.. Thanks again!

Sounds like something I might like, thank you for the recommendation. Is this a conversational kind of movie? Or is it more party?

It's more of a fun night out, it wouldn't bring much of a discussion, it's set in Liverpool during high unemployment. It's quite funny in parts and shows some great shots of Liverpool as it was 30yrs ago.

One of the worst - you know my tastes and dislikes!

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll put an automatic recording, and try to find the rest!

@matt72582

Somewhat randomly it dawned on me to recommend this ... of course if you're still looking for suggestions.
