No plebeians allowed! - Mr Minio's honest music thread

Tools

I listened to the first song on Niggas on the Moon. Well, it was okay, but I don't think I'll listen to it again, but I do want to listen to more of their music. I don't know what you mean by repetitive though Minio. I thought there was a good amount of diversity and inovation in the song I listened to anyway. The one where he made like $5 by repeating "Up my sleeve" twenty five times in the intro, even in that there were a number of transitions and changes in pretty much every aspect from the drums to the vocals to the I don't know what the rest of the music was, synth or electronic or something I guess...

Why are you even listening to rap? You've shown that you think it is sh!tty because you don't care about lyrics already, you should just move onto Bosnian Tambourine jigs or something.

I'm listening to their No Love Deep Web album, and I'm liking it quite a bit. It's got much better sound production quality than Niggas on the Moon, and it has a pretty well developed sound overall.

I like them because I haven't heard rap like this before. I don't normally like rap either though.

I think Death Grips is a rather forward-thinking group (like you said Zotis, they're very original sounding) but I don't care about the hype. I just f*cking love them. They are an incredibly distinctive group in every regard and I absolutely love the raw, abrasive, visceral quality to their music. I'm not an intensely angry person, actually quite the opposite - I'm a very content person emotionally, so they make me feel something I don't normally feel on my own.

People often turn their nose up at this kind of angry, abrasive music, but...

Sometimes you need to relax to some soothing music. But sometimes, you need to unleash your inner demons in a healthy way. Death Grips is one group that provides that kind of outlet for me. And yet, that's not a particular thing I think about when listening to Death Grips or Pig Destroyer. It's just a dark aesthetic that, for whatever reason, appeals to me. Having to deal with schizophrenia, you have a lot of intensely dark thoughts, and after a while you find comfort in art that deals with darkness. I'm not sure why. Maybe the fact knowing that there are others out there with personal demons.

Above all else? Death Grips is just fun as hell. I'm seeing them live in April with some friends and I couldn't be more excited.

池玲子 - 恍惚の世界 [Reiko Ike - Koukotsu no Sekai] (1971)

This is a relisten, because I already listened to it in 2014, but I felt like I need some more moaning, so here we go. If you're unfamiliar with Reiko Ike, or Pinky Violence you can still give it a listen, but you most probably won't understand its appeal. Also, being a Japan-o-maniac and pervert helps a great deal. So, what we have here is basically some Lounge tunes with a spice of Kayōkyoku (oldschool Japanese pop) and Reiko Ike's "vocals". These are incredibly varied and besides your usual singing (she's quite good!) we have purrs (some of those sound like this relaxing purr from that hipster song 쓸쓸쓸), moans (all kinds of those, very titillating), laughing (why not!) and even some whip'n'moan sound effects on the 9th track. This stuff is very relaxing and as good as easy-listening music gets. It also has the spirit of them 70's Pinky Violence movies. You think Je t'aime by Gainsbourg and Birkin is the peak of erotic music? Think again as here comes the Cross that makes grown men weep, who chose the life of a gangster!

Cons:
- The cover does not reveal enough!
- First two beats of one of the songs sound like The Sound of Silence (but then it changes, so not a biggie)
- Not for children!
- It's only in the sound form...

Pros:
+ ... but that makes your imagination work
+ Reiko Ike
+ Moans
+ Audio porn
+ A nipple on the cover
+ Swan enjoying Reiko's personality
+ Chill as hell

Thinking about Reiko Ike and this thread and Swan and what not I started wondering what if Reiko Ike started rapping on one of these songs. Rapping. In 1971! That would be a 5 star album then!

It may be easy-listening, but it will make you hard.

F*ck they should use it as a slogan when advertising this CD.
Oh, well I just mean in general. I'm sure this is an exception... maybe I'd better just listen to it...

*listens to a song*

Love the stomach grumbling sounds. She must be hungry... for you know what... carrots, or hot dogs or something of that nature...

Hmm... well it does have a lot of easy listening elements, which I really actually can't stand. But I wouldn't say it's bad. I don't know enough about this type of music to asses the quality, but she's got a great voice.

An amazing hot rap single from Michael Rosen! With better flow than Killer Mike and better lyrics than Kendrick Lamar, this British children rapper is here to bring you the best of the best!

Kendrick Lamar - untitled unmastered. -

If you're listening to the material that was rejected even to be a part of a legitemate Kendrick Lamar album, you know something's wrong.BUT THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS ALBUM. In fact, it's the best rap album I've ever heard and one of the best albums ever. It's only 34 minutes long, so it never loses it's momentum and Anna Wise's hook on track 5 is so cool... It also features some of the deepest lyrics I've ever heard in my life, like:

"Come here, girl
Oh, you want me to touch you right there?
Oh, like a little lamb, play in your hair
Oh you want it? Oh you want it right now
Like that? I got you baby
All on you baby
Push it back on daddy
Push it back on daddy baby"

However, the cover is ugly, so I'm forced to decrease the rating to

I've seen things...
For all the rap haters I'd like to reccomend a superb album from A Tribe Called Quest called Midnight Marauders. They tend to use a lot of groovy jazz samples and their raps are mostly socially concious from what I've heard (I've yet to dig deeper into the lyrics).
And there's also a robot guide to bring some more cohesion to the album which is pretty sweet too.
The album is really chill as well, and The Quest's music feels really distant from all the gangsta rap, for those of you who aren't really in to that.
It's just too bad that I just recently started listening to them and the other day one them passed away, R.I.P.

Too bad I can't post links since I'm new but please look it up

Discovering Radiohead chronologically - Part 1: Pablo Honey

Okay, guys. Since they released a new albums like yesterday (?) I decided to go through their discography and make it all the way up to the latest album. The first one, Pablo Honey, has a surprisingly low rating on RYM - 2.86, the followup The Bends got 3.96 and the next one - OK Computer - is considered the best album of all time on RYM with a dazzling rating of 4.22. it's also the only Radiohead album I've heard previously. Given a criminally low rating of Pablo Honey I was expecting a real disaster. However, the album plays nicely with maybe not too original, but likable indie (alternative?) rock flavor.

The first song, You, is an epitome of this unoriginality. It lacks a proper kick and lavishness of the next track, Creep, whose lyrics ideally correspond to myself, I guess. After all "I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo". That rare occasion when I pay attention to the lyrics. How do you do sounds like pop punk or something. If this song was done by a Japanese band with a female vocalist I'd probably fall in love with it. The truth is, if the whole album was with a cute Japanese girl singing over it, I'd rate it much higher. I don't know if this tells anything about me, but the next song Stop Whispering has some very nice vocals. Even though not by a Japanese lady, but by a British lad, they're cool. I think if they went more into early Brian Eno style on this one, it would've been even better, but I still can hear some similarities and the track is superb. Thinking About You is some acoustic ballad, serenade, or something. It's not bad, but I can totally see some noise guitar kicking in in about half of this song to derange it a little bit. Yeah, probably been listening to too much Slap Happy Humphrey lately.... But man, wouldn't it be cool. Anyone Can Play Guitar starts interestingly, but then gets too cheesily melodic and poppy, oh, forget it. It's cool. And what's up with Jim Morrison being mentioned so many times? Ripcord seems to continue the idea of the previous track and delivers some very melodic easy-on-ears music. Vegetable even has a guitar solo, one that is heavily grounded in the song, kinda noisy, too. No guitar neck masturbation here. With Prove Yourself I'm more and more convinced the hate the album received stems from it sounding just like any other alternative rock band of its time. I don't know any other albums at this point, but my guess is on next albums Radiohead will work out their own, original style and it will be the reason for people falling in love with them and holding them in such a high regard. I can't may be the weakest song on the album, but the ending is cool. Lugree is mediocre and the last track Blow Out is good, a great way to end an album. Much better than the opening track.

Summing up, RYM users are high or stupid rating this album as low as 2.86 whereas most contemporary rap gets at least 3.50 there. A bunch of n00bs. I listened to the album twice, the second time when writing this pseudo-review and I can't say it's a bad album. It's pretty cool. I feel like giving a strong 3 to weak 3.5 for this thing.

Any Radiohead fans here?

Pablo Honey is easily their weakest IMO. It's the only one i don't like, think that may be a good sign that you'll enjoy some of their stuff, but knowing you that will probably turn out to be your favourite. Kid A is my favourite for the record. I'd go:

Kid A>Ok Computer>Hail To The Thief>In Rainbows>The Bends>The King of Limbs>Amnesiac>Pablo Honey

Haven't heard A Moon Shaped Pool yet.
