Them! still stands as my favorite giant bug film to date. Far better than it has the right to be.
But what's the best 1950s giant-spider movie? That is the question.
Oh yeah, Them! is the standard for bug movies (though I have tremendous nostalgia for Empire Of The Ants).

I know it's a bit of a cheat, but the creepiest spider in 50s movies to me was actually in The Fly.
Yes, the spider is normal sized, and it's just the guy that's tiny, but I found the scene really disturbing when I was young, and still do, honestly.

I don't have a clear memory of specifically spider movies, but I remember Beast From Haunted Cave being a good spider movie. Free on youtube too.
Re-watched Nosferatu (2024) this weekend. It played better with my expectations aligned with more of what we got than what I had hoped in my mind. Also not having a bladder that felt uncomfortably after 30 minutes.
Certain weaknesses in the film are still there. But I guess, kind of ignore them for now and hope the extended version will add more of what one likes - though what we all like might differ. I recall on my first viewing, during one scene, thinking, "Lilly Rose-Depp is fine here, but this is just feeling like lines delivered, but, I really wish Anya Taylor-Joy was in this." This time, I don't recall explicitly having that moment and thinking her performance wasn't bad. I still think one of the great weaknesses of the film feels like, we've gotten away from the central hook/theme of the reason why this rendition might exist, which in my mind is, the psychological duress young women would feel in a constrictive, repressed, society (a woman who might be suffering from hysteria in those times), might find darkness appealing, and the possible consequences of finding succor in that), and we've fallen into progressing the plot of a Dracula adaptation. When we get scenes of Ines and Dafoe on their quest, it's like, "two amazing actors, but I'm really just not interested in this scene."
So, hopefully any extended version contributes to social or thematic aspect (possible societal collapse stuff always appeals to me as well) and not... just plot stuff?
ETA: I am also not sure how one would get rid of those parts. To show a society encouraging one of repression for Ellen, then she must interact with people, which presumably means the characters from the book, who would probably be doing the Dracula plot progressions. I guess I could have lived without a Van Helsing character. That would have required figuring out how to get from M to Z in terms of the plot without him, but I suspect that could have been done.

I watched Strange Darling this morning (woo! snow day!). I quite enjoyed it.
I do wish that the director had resisted a certain (vague SPOILERS)
, but nonetheless I enjoyed the ride and the overall unpredictability of it.

musical cue in the first 5 minutes that gives away the game too early

I can't point to a particular clue that tipped me off, more like just a general skepticism that I've developed over the years. But that only amounted to "maybe he's actually the good guy". I didn't predict anything else, so nothing was ruined for me. The nonlinear thing definitely worked in the film's favor. I feel like the various twists and turns might've seemed more rote if presented in sequence.
Good stuff, well worth my $6.56 rental! Thanks to Wooley for calling it to my attention many months ago.

Speaking of us pushing movies for other people.
Some time in the past few months I saw You Won't Be Alone (2022). It's about a mute/feral girl raised as a Macedonian witch (language is in Macedonian), but the voice-over narration makes it feel like they're going for a later-career Terrence Malick film.
It made me think of something @Takoma11 or @Wooley would like (though not as an October viewing for Wooley).

I really liked You Won't Be Alone but it's definitely more slow dark fantasy drama with some horror trappings than straight up scary film.

Next up is Tilbury (1987) a very weird little film, it lays out the folklore immediately which kind of undercuts a lot of what follows in regards to any mystery. While there is some amusing comedy, tragedy, farcial takes on the military and dream stuff going on it's kind of undercut for me in that I never really felt like the characters where fleshed out enough to make any of it connect, the film clocks in at a brisk 57 minutes and could have really used some time to explore it's primary characters more. I didn't really care for it but if you like Folk horror it's such a quick watch that checking it out can't hurt.
I agree that it needed to be fleshed out more and to have more breathing room because character development suffers as a result of it being so efficienct.

A "first look" photo has been released of the title character in Screamboat (the public-domain cash grab using Disney's Steamboat Willie character).

I think I am already getting nightmares...

DARK HARVEST (2023) has an interesting premise: Sawtooth Jack, some sort of undead Pumpkinhead/Great Pumpkin hybrid, rises from a small-town corn field every Halloween and makes his way toward the local church. Some bad thing (not sure what, exactly) will happen if he reaches the church so the local high school boys are recruited every year to hunt him down and kill him before he reaches said church. This is set in the early 60s by the way.
Kind of a cool idea, and I guess it delivers on Halloween/October vibes, but the rules of this town/ritual were not at all clear to me. Maybe I'm just a dummy but I think they failed to sufficiently lay out the rules/stakes. (I left out a bunch of side rules for brevity's sake).
Also, I was less interested in the macho teen boy Rumble Fish stuff that takes up a big chunk of time. I understand it's based on a novel so I'm wondering if I might enjoy that more. Anyone read it?

My favorite is The Deadly Mantis but I'm partial to praying manti.
Also, the final shot of it in the tunnel is fantastic.
