Not counting croatian films and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, The Return (2003) and Faust (1994) are my favourites. Besides them there's Come and see (1985), Grave of the Fireflies (1988), The Illusionist (2010), A Jester's Tale (1965) and Harakiri (1961).

Nah not really. I have pretty poor film knowledge of the early part of the last century. Wouldn't know where to start.

I'd have to say my favorite foreign language film is a 2015 Korean film called The Tiger (Daeho). It is a wonderful story and beautifully shot. I could never say enough good things about this film. There are many other great foreign language films that I've enjoyed as well. Here are a few of them:
