Musical Movies based on Stage Musicals based on Movies

Tools

There's a weird sub-genre of movie musicals that's so niche, it's possible there are only four or five of them.
It's Movie Musicals that are based off of Stage Musicals, which were themselves based off of movies that weren't musicals.
I can only think four/five. Can anyone guess what they are? And are there more? Any ones I'm forgetting?

And one of the five may or may not count, which I'll give away: Sweeney Todd (2007).

It technically fits, but it was better known as an urban legend/scary story rather than from the few old movies based on him.

I did look it up, to check if there was authenticity to the story, and not much is known for sure. Through criminal records wecan confirm there was a man named Sweeney Todd that was convicted and hung for murder, but there are no further details. Everything else was passed down as an early urban legend.

Mean Girls?

The Phantom of the Opera 2004 movie starring Gerard Butler, from the stage musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which was preceded by (most notably) the 1925 movie starring Lon Chaney.

Les Misérables 2012 movie starring Hugh Jackman, from the stage musical produced by Cameron Mackintosh, which was preceded by (most notably) the 1935 movie starring starring Fredric March and Charles Laughton.

OPEN FLOOR.

I forgot the opening line.
Nobody has mentioned The Producers yet.

There was the 1967 film.

Then the 2001 Broadway musical.

Then the 2005 movie adaptation of that Broadway musical.

Latest Review : Goldeneye (1995)

Oops! I forgot about Les Mis. That makes 6 then. And yes, Phantom of the Opera is another one of them.

Indeed! Producers is another one.

That just leaves two.

Little Shop of Horrors is the first answer that springs to mind.

And that's the final one I can think of. Sorry the replies aren't in order, I'm sleepy 😴

Here are a couple of interesting ones:

My Fair Lady 1964 movie is based on the 1956 stage musical starring Julie Andrews, which was based on the 1938 movie Pygmalion starring Leslie Howard and Wendy Hiller.

West Side Story 1961 movie is based on the 1957 stage musical conceived by Jerome Robbins with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, which was based on the 1936 movie Romeo and Juliet starring Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer.

I feel like we're in "I'm my own grandpa territory." Anything with staying power will be told and retold. Culture is the ultimate recycling machine. Culture IS appropriation. All great tales have a touch of the Ouroboros.

Then I feel down a wiki hole, and discovered that the original Mean Girls was written by Tina Fey.

Also, it occurred to me that Phantom of the Opera actually has another movie musical based on it, Phantom of the Paradise. It doesn't fit what we're looking at, but it's rare to have anything besides fairy tales adapted into musicals in two different ways, at different times.

(I'm not sure if this one counts.)

It hasn't been released yet, but the upcoming movie Wicked is based on the stage musical Wicked, which is based on the 1939 The Wizard of Oz movie, which was based on the 1910 silent film The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

I had no idea the play My Fair Lady was based on an older movie. Nice!

I didn't think to count Shakespeare adaptations, but that's fair. Another two is added to the list.

I think that's stretching 'adaptation' a bit too far. But use your own judgement. I'm not in charge here. :-)

Oliver! 1968 movie is based on the 1960 stage musical by Lionel Bart, which was based on David Lean's 1938 movie Oliver Twist starring John Howard Davies as Oliver and Alec Guinness as Fagin.

Another one I forgot about! What are we up to, 10 or so?

The 1960 stage musical was NOT based on Lean's movie, it was based on the Charles Dickens novel.
