It is 1937 in Shanghai as the second Sino-Japanese War looms.
A Shanghai crime boss, Mr. Lu, enters into a deal with Japanese bankers through his Japanese brother-in-law. Caught in the middle is a Chinese actress, who is married to Mr. Lu's boss.
The scenes that unfold span almost a decade but are rearranged in the form of flashbacks.
One looks on this cinematic jig saw puzzle that is meticulously constructed like a fine Swiss watch and can not help but be impressed by it's flawless precision and beautiful imagery.
Director Cheng Er also wrote and edited this movie, which I viewed as a cinematic master piece.
