Consider these as second-tier war films that give alternative perspectives of war as such.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
Come and See (1985)
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
Che (2008)
Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
Atonement (2007)
The Wind That Shakes The Barley (2006)
Battleship Potemkin (1925)
Barry Lyndon (1975)
Full Metal Jacket (1987)
In the Valley of Elah (2007)
A Very Long Engagement (2004)
Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
Mulan (1998)

Here's my list

Lord of the Rings
Brave Heart
The Last Samurai
Saving Private Ryan
The Patriot
Gladiator
Windtalkers
Rules of Engagement

Gotta be saving private ryan

What about 300 Spartans and The Hurt Locker....
I think these movies are best of war movies which people really liked..

I didn't see the 1981 movie Das Boot in this list. If not, then it should be here. Great Wolfgang Petersen movie (nominated for 6 Oscars) about a German u-boat crew in WWII. Arguably, the best submarine movie ever made.

It';s interesting you link someone popular like Wolfgang Petersen..
I think he is very well known already..
The link is an accident -- from copy/paste from IMDB. Sorry. I'll get rid of it.

I also saw some great war films..here are the list that I love..

The PathFinder
We Were Soldiers
King Arthur
The Patriot
WindTalkers
Legionnaire
The Scorpion King
The Gladiator

I saw a lot of great war films but I only just remembered few.

great list indeed...

"The sands of the sands of Iwo Jima" Not so much for the flag waving story but it mixed with real footage of the marines on the beach at Iwo Jima and I would not have liked to have been there. A nice twist at the end.

That is a very good list teamwork, but you almost have to subcategorize it by type of War.
