Did anyone hear about this? The Battle of Britain, in which the hevily outnumbered RAF defeated the German Luftwaffe, is considered the air force's finest hour. But veterans fear that a new Hollywood blockbuster will show the World War II battle was single handedly won by a US fighter pilot.

Tom Cruise will play Billy Fiske, one of 12 Americans who flew alongside the 2,365 strong British forc. The Chicago businessman recorded no official kills and died when he crash-landed after 42 minutes. RAF veterans expressed outrage over the film, provisionally titled "The Few"

"I'm appalled," said Sir Archie Winskill, an 86-year old who flew with 603 Squadron. "Young people who haven't read anything about the Battle of Britain might accept this rubbish as the truth."

A spokesman for Cruise said: "It is too early to talk about the final script."
