Pretentious/Overblown Movies You Have Seen?

E.T. - the extra terrestrial

I've got a movie that fits this description: Ulysses' Gaze. It's laughably full of hot air, with scenes like Harvey Keitel wandering around a devastated Sarajevo for what seems like 30 minutes and then asking someone "is this Sarajevo" and a nearly as long, unbroken shot of a broken Lenin statue floating down a river. It's one of those movies you could describe as a testament to the director's own inflated ego. Based on Roger Ebert's review of it, which mentions Theo's behavior at Cannes, it might as well be.

I just recently saw the much lauded Dr. Strangelove or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb and thought it was overblown. It was only 94 minutes and it was hardly funny. I thought: that's it?!

Welcome to the human race...
Nuclear war is no laughing matter.

But seriously, I think it depends on how you define funny - it's more a clever funny than a laugh-out-loud funny, which are both valid approaches to comedy.
