Sad Songs Song Tournament

What makes a song a "sad song"? That's something for each of you to decide for yourself, but if you think it's a sad song, then it's eligible for this tournament. If it makes you tear up, that's great. If it makes you cry like a baby, that's even better.

Please Note: There have been a lot of drop-outs from these tournaments recently, so if you're not planning to vote throughout the entire tournament, you're welcome to comment and join the discussion, but please don't join the tournament just to drop out later. It affects the flow of the tournament, and upsets the host.

Plus, due to the fact that it's unfair to the other members of the tournament, the new rule is that if you drop out, your songs will automatically be eliminated, and if necessary, whatever songs they're up against will get a free pass to the next round.

Rules:
All genres are eligible, with no limitations on genre, but the theme is Sad Songs, as listed above. In addition, songs that are previous tournament winners and songs that are over 10 minutes long are NOT eligible.

I think it's safe to assume that everyone will be able to nominate at least eight songs, so you can start posting your nominations as soon as you join the tournament. Please keep your nominations in one post. You can edit your nominations up until the time the nominations close, but please make a new post to let everyone know that your nominations have changed.

Any song is allowed as long as you can provide a link to it. Everyone uses YouTube, but you can also link from other sites if you prefer, as long as they don't require anyone to sign up for the site to listen to the song.

To be fair to everyone, you must listen to both songs to vote. You must vote from the beginning of the tournament to continue voting throughout the tournament. Unless a tie-breaking vote is requested, anyone who hasn't voted consistently will not be allowed to vote in the final rounds.

If you have any questions, please ask.

I'm in though I'm beginning to think my idea of sad might be somewhat different from other people's

I'll edit my noms in here, as is normal for me they'll probably change over time so I'll pm ya when I've done pharting around with them.

Brenda Lee - The End Of The World
Buddy Miller - I Can't Get Over You
Chris Stapleton - Daddy Doesn't Pray Here Anymore
Devil Doll - It Was Raining
John Grant - Why Don't You Love Me Anymore
Katie Melua - The One I Love Is Gone
Obi - Plague On This House
Swans - No Cure For The Lonely

You can't make a rainbow without a little rain.
I added the nominations into the first post, but you can still make changes until the tournament starts. Just let me know if you change anything, and I'll update the first post.

This tournament won't start until the current "Decades" tournament ends, so you still have plenty of time to think about your nominations.

I'll join. I'll dwell on some songs today. I have to leave here in roughly 2 hours, and I haven't even slept yet. I am tired, man. That should make me poohy enough for sad songs.

You can't make a rainbow without a little rain.

Christine, the link you have for "Kris Kristofferson - Sunday Morning Coming Down" has the message "This video contains content from SME, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds. Sorry about that.".

I can't seem to find any versions of this song that weren't recorded live. (I'm not even sure that a studio recording of him singing this song exists.)

Is one of these links okay as an alternate, or do you have a different link that you prefer?

Kris Kristofferson Live at the Johnny Cash Memorial

Sadly Starless is too long for this one Lil Dev.

Good catch, Chyp.

I checked to make sure that the links were working, but I didn't check the length of the songs.
Thought I'd best mention it just in case as you do have the full criteria listed. I let both Starless and reso's Night Of The Assassins in the Decades tourney because it was totally my fault that I omitted to mention the usual time-limit in the 'boring stuff'. Sorry for creating any confusion Lil Dev.

@Nestorio_Miklos
How to make hyperlinks:

1. Copy the url of the link you want
2. Type the text of the song or whatever in a response ... i.e. Clive Dunn - Grandad
3. Highlight the text
4. In the list of optional actions at the top of the response box (where italics, bold, underline etc. is click the picture of a globe with 2 links of a chain underneath it
5. In the box that comes up paste the url you copied earlier (as long as you don't click in the box this should automatically replace the "http://" already there)
6. Edit the "www" in the link to "m"
7. Click ok and it will wrap the HTML for the link around the text and that's it

Repeat that for each one you want to do.

You can verify they look ok and even that they work by previewing the post.

For example here's the one for Clive Dunn - Grandad

You have a total of eight nominations if you wish (thus far) btw

You can't make a rainbow without a little rain.
I'm in on this and my noms are (5 songs):
Sorry guys I couldn't figure out how to make hyperlinks

Ðèstîñy posted instructions (with screenshots) about how to make the links. Here's the link to her post:

http://www.movieforums.com/community...73#post1630873

Basically, you just have to change the "www" part of the YouTube link to the letter "m", and then link it to the song title and artist.

You can post 8 songs now, and based on how many people join, we'll see if we need to add some more songs in the next few days.

I've just edited it. Thanks a lot!

Hi GBG, could you use the first link. You can substitute my original for that one, it's a great live version

So, after you post your songs, what happens next? How does the voting system work? Sorry, I'm new at this. I read the first page about the rules and "not dropping out" but not sure what that means.

It's a knockout competition ... songs will be matched randomly against each other and participants will vote on which song they prefer each time (most commonly 8 matches per day) .... the song with the most votes in each match go through to the next round.
