I like his films and his sense of humor. Really liked Dogma and Jay and Bob, as well as Clerks. Still haven't seen Chasing Amy (on the list). Zack and Miri was good but prefer his older stuff so far.

I don't understand the appeal of Kevin Smith films... actually I do.

He often speaks to the lowest common denominator. His films are often gross out/pot head humor, which certainly resonates with a solid demographic. I have no use for his films. I've seen Clerks, which was acted poorly I thought. Maybe that was the point? Certainly his films reach out to people who lack ambition and are satisfied working at the local QT or 711 claiming, "I'm not even supposed to be here."

I've also seen bits of Dogma, which left me uninspired. Religion told by people who fell asleep during Sunday school with some humor blended in. I just find the man and his films to be a snooze.

I guess it's a matter of personal preference.

*bow's* Kevin smith is awesome

RIP www.moviejustice.com 2002-2010
I am a big fan of Kevin Smith's and have seen all of his movies except Jersey Girl which I don't really want to see. Not enough crudeness and profanity.
And see, that's exactly what I'm talking about when I say his target audience. Of course he knows his fans expect that sort of thing and that's what's keeping the dollars in his bank account and his projects being funded. If you're a fan of the man's work, wouldn't you want to see all of it?

get off your high horse.....just agree to disagree.

How about you not dictate what people should post.

Better as by old men who are abusing little children and ultra-right destroyers in the name of god, imho. I also think you are riding some kind of high horse. Or you judge a book by his cover, if you prefer this metaphor.

Actually I prefer religion told by no one as I think it's silly, though a necessary step in our evolution as human beings - the one animal capable of truly being aware of death at a metacognition level thinking about our lack of thinking after death... the solution... God, Heaven, etc.

In my mind, the ultra right patriotic, traditional version of religion in this country is just as bad as the liberal lets make it more hip and cool and label it "Christian" with unbearable migraine inducing pop music, while retaining the the good word - Joel Ostein style of complete BS because you know... you can be a better you and make more money and thus give more to my youppie not so little church... is just as bad.

Anyways. What was this thread about?

I wouldn't say I'm judging Kevin Smith by his cover. I'm judging Kevin Smith by the cover, reading the first few characters, maybe a chapter toward the end and by judging the people that are reading that book.

That would be a more accurate metaphor if you prefer.

Agreed. But for the majority it`s a needed center in a chaotic world or universe. So there is and will be always a talk about it. I prefer an open discussion with many different opinions instead of one truth, instead of only haters and believers. That`s only a higher level of dumbness. And if moviemakers like Smith would shut up out of pure respect, the discussion would surely turn this way.

Religion is a sword. It was sharper once, but it`s still mighty and here on earth people are using it, in every way they can.

No problem. Slackerstyle is sometimes hard to handle. Maybe you should try out "Jersey Girl" when you are in a good mood. It`s a bit different from the others and it`s clean, not obscene. But you have to accept, that Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler are in the lead-roles.

You mean just as you are telling me, in this post?.....Pot meet kettle

Sorry Harmonica.......I got to stay here.
The world needs more fart jokes. Instead of religious fantatics killing cartoonists, the Westboro Baptist Church, constant jihad wars and all the other countless stupid things going on in the world. Things have gotten just plain out of hand. So we need Kevin and every one of his poop and fart and d$ck jokes. Amen

I hurt from laughing after watching Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. That one was pretty damn funny.

Keep on Rockin in the Free World
There were several Kevin Smith threads to choose from. I chose this one only because it had the most recent entry.

I've been reading about Kevin Smiths' new movie which was financed outside of the hollywood machine, Red State.

It sounds decidely like a Tarantinoesque Grindhouse flick that used to be churned out for the Drive-in 30 years ago.

I'm not so sure Kevin Smith can pull it off, and considering the plot, getting a distributor for wide release is far from a slam dunk.

thoughts?

KEVIN SMITH IS A GOD!!! Dogma kicked arse, as did Clerks 1+2, Jay and Silent-Bob Strike Back. I just love them all. He's just great.

If I had to rank his movies

1a. Chasing Amy
1b. Clerks
3. Zach and Miri Make a Porno
4. Dogma
5. Mallrats
6. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (I still like it, it's just not my favorite of his)

Havn't seen Cop Out or Jersey Girl.

I'm really exited about Red State though. Michael Parks is my hero.
