I think it was about the evolution of a woman from a newbie in Hollywood to a member of the sad truth that Hollywood can be a hellhole. Laura Fern slowly learns to fraternize with the prostitutes and eventually becomes one of them. The odd time-travel references and the escalating conversation with the Polish woman seem to be references to warnings concerning Hollywood's personal and psychological effects on people, and the death scene represents her full evolution. As she comes to grips with it in the end, embracing the Lost Girl and appearing before a stage, she comes to the realization that by being brought into Hollywood, she now has a power to influence her fans and potentially save lives.
