Rob Epstein's The Times of Harvey Milk (1984) is definitely my all-time favorite documentary, if forced to choose just one. Gus Van Sant's 2008 biopic is an earnest film with some good performances but for me it doesn't come close to being as moving nor involving as this 90-minute doc. You get such a wonderful feeling of his importance and his personality as well as the pain and anger over his assassination, not just through the archival footage of Harvey himself but from the interviews of his friends and colleagues. I am actually overdue for a re-watch, but I have seen it a couple dozen times since its release. Never fails to make me laugh and cry.

Hoops dreams is quite good as well.

I’ve been meaning to watch Shoah for a very long time. We’re talking close to 15 years since I first heard of it. But that running time has me hesitant to do so.
Maybe sometime in the future when I have a few days of nothing to do and I can split it up

I watched it over the course of two days. Documentaries normally aren't my favorite genre as I generally feel emotionally distant to them more than I do for most other genres, but I was surprised as to how much I enjoyed it. Despite showing no stock footage from the concentration camps, it allows for you to feel what happened in them with interviews and current footage of the concentration camps. It's a truly devastating film. I kind of wish I watched it all in one go. It's just hard to find 9 hours of free time nowadays.
