If you are looking for a laugh avoid Hubie Halloween and catch The Forty-year-old Version on Netflix. It’s a very funny, laugh out loud, “behind the scenes” comedy about theater. It addresses the issue of “the white gaze” and how black artists are encouraged to portray themselves to accommodate those expectations in wryly funny way. Don't be scared because it is P.C! It covers a lot of ground besides just the theater angle. The main character, Radha goes through a mid-life crisis and takes up rapping. Her raps are mostly hilarious. It also goes against type in that an older, larger woman gets laid and it is not portrayed as some kind of miracle (except by the homeless guy who is living outside her house.) She also teaches theater in a high school so it’s got a little high school drama. And it lightly touches on grief as the main characters mother, an artist herself, has died. If you are looking for a movie that has a strong female character and truly expresses feminist thought in non-stereotypical, non-pandering, way. This is the movie for you. The only time I thought it was doing anything like that is when they made the popular girl reveal a crush on the butch girl. It wasn’t handle in the realistic somewhat nuanced manner that say the hook up with Radha and the beats guy was. I recommend this movie to anyone looking for a laugh.
