Film4's "100 Must-See Films of the 21st Century" 2014

Tools

For me my picks from the list would be:

Boyhood
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Spirited Away
Before Sunset
Pan's Labyrinth
The Social Network
A History of Violence
Punch-Drunk Love
Elephant
Mean Girls
Shaun of the dead
Battle Royale
The Dark Knight
In Bruges
Four Lions
The Wolf of Wall Street
How I Live Now
We Need to Talk About Kevin
District 9

To be honest I don't have a problem as such with the other films, they are just not for me. I would however swap out The Wolf of Wall Street for The Departed, I know it is a remake of a film that was made before the 20th but I think it is the better film between the two Scorsese films.

Yet again Film4 showing they know very little.

I was going to ask, are there any films on the list that you like, HK?
We all know how much HK loves There Will Be Blood.

9 - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
10 - Zodiac
17 - Before Sunset
23 - Brokeback Mountain
26 - Let the Right One in
38 - A History of Violence
42 - Gravity
47 - The Lives of Others
51 - City of God
54 - Berberian Sound Studio
55 - The Descent
56 - Ginger Snaps
68 - This Is England
71 - Battle Royale
77 - Four Lions
83 - Attack The Block
I like those, but maybe only 4 or 5 of them would be films I'd be happy with being on such a list. There might be a few more if/when I see them.

I'll give my opinion about each entry that I know. Agreeing with the inclusion doesn't necessarily mean that I would also include that particular film on my personal list, by the way.

These are the ones I've seen:

1 - Mulholland Drive - Classic. Deserves to be on this list.
3 - There Will Be Blood - Classic. Deserves to be on this list.
4 - Under the Skin - It's a little bit early to say perhaps, but it's not an abominabel inclusion.
6 - In the Mood for Love - Best film from the 2000s/2010s so far in my opinion, so definitely deserves to be on here!
9 - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - It's not a personal favorite, but it deserves to be on this list.
10 - Zodiac - Again, not a personal favorite, but probably deserves to be on this list.
11 - Spirited Away - Yes!
12 - Far from Heaven - Good film, but kind of an odd inclusion, in my opinion.
17 - Before Sunset - Yes!
20 - 12 Years A Slave - I would personally say no.
25 - No Country for Old Men - Yes!
30 - The Social Network - Yep.
32 - The Royal Tenenbaums - Sure, why not!
38 - A History of Violence - Nope.
40 - Ghost World - Mwah. I very much like this film, so let's say yes.
41 - Sexy Beast - Yeah!
42 - Gravity - ASBOLUTELY YES!
43 - Frances Ha - I don't disagree.
45 - Punch-Drunk Love - Yep. Agreed!
52 - The Great Beauty - Si!
53 - The Lord of the Rings Trilogy - I can't disagree.
60 - Mean Girls - ???
63 - Shaun of the dead - Fun film. Not sure if it belongs here, but I won't disagree.
64 - Bridesmaids - WTF???
69 - The Man Who Wasn't There - YES!!!
71 - Battle Royale - I don't see why not.
72 - A.I. Artificial Intelligence - Yes!
74 - The Dark Knight - Well, I guess so.
80 - Lost in Translation - Yes.
81 - The Wolf of Wall Street - F*CKING YES!
82 - American Psycho - Oh my God, yes!
86 - Frozen - Not in my opinion.
92 - Finding Nemo - Hmmm... I'll say yes, because it's a Pixar classic and because I really like it.
94 - Nymphomaniac - Nope.
96 - Slumdog Millionaire - Pfff... Nah.
100 - Casino Royale - No. Definitely no.

I hereby certify Skepsis as the real MOFO Humphrey Bogart!
That would mean something if you actually had something to say around here.

Besides, Mark F is the official MoFo Humphrey Bogart.

you not like those films ?

Not that I don't like them... I just found them overrated.

As in... overly overrated.

People were raving heavily about them and I found them to be decent... watchable and enjoyable at best.
But certainly not the groundbreaking fantastic masterpieces of immense significance that people were making them out to be.

Yeah, that film everyone was hailing as a groundbreaking fantastic masterpiece of immense significance, Goon. Surprised Criterion haven't picked it up yet.

A loving heart is the truest wisdom.
This is probably the weirdest movie list I've seen since the Empire's 500 list that ranked Transformers higher than Princess Mononoke. How did The Avengers and Frozen make the list but not Les Miserables or Django Unchained? I mean, I love The Avengers but I definitely wouldn't put on a best of the century list and Frozen was mess in my opinion.

Les Miserables? :s

You're damn right about the Empire's 500 list, though. Awful.

Well to be fair, this new century is not even halfway over. Not that much to choose from. Kinda makes the best of the 21st Century so fa kinda pointless if ya ask me.
