In the USA a transient has been attacked by a dog(s). Police arrest him and charge him with vagrancy. A local woman takes him to her home to work on her farm. Her husband is MIA overseas and presumed dead. They come to have feelings for each other. He becomes friends with her little girl.

In one scene the locals accuse him of being a coward for not fighting in the war and beat on him.

As he's walking away from the woman's home in the end, he passes her MIA husband who's returning home from the war.

Name of movie?

Somebody else was searching for this about a year ago. I'm pretty sure the title of the film you're looking for is 'Run the Wild Fields' (2000), and it stars Joanne Whalley and Sean Patrick Flanery.
