Jesse Haaja, the creator of Finland's 1st cinematic superhero Rendel is currently developing a sequel to his 2017 hit film, in which the titular masked vigilante avenges his family, who were murdered at the hands of the VALA chemical corporation, who developed a vaccine meant to save lives but only caused more deaths.

The announcement was made at the Cannes Film Festival. I do recommend the 1st film as it was dark and gritty and juxtaposes between the present day and Rendel's evolution.

Shooting is beginning on the film in September and due to the film being a hit internationally, the sequel will be shot entirely in English. Lead actor Kris Gummerus will return to the role of Rendel while British actor Sean Cronin has been cast as the main nemesis, Smiley.

I had to an article from Finland about the sequel.

Excited that shooting has begun! Jesse Haaja has been posting BTS pics on the set via his Twitter (@JesseHaaja)

On-set photo has Kaitlyn Boye, Rendel himself Kris Gummerus, Bruce Payne (the lead villain of Passenger 57), and Sean Cronin.

The project looks to be officially dead now. After principal photography was completed, reshoots and pickups were stopped by a little thing called the COVID-19 pandemic. Jesse Haaja, plagued with the post-shooting issues and all, had announced in February 2022 that he was retiring from the film industry and directing as a whole. His last work was a music video for Finnish rock band The Rasmus.
