The Squid and The Whale question

I am racking my brain trying to think of this and I'm too lazy to get out the dvd and watch the whole movie (though I do love it). I'm trying to remember what Jeff Daniels' character calls Baldwin's tennis instructor. For some reason "dilettante" is coming into my mind but I know it's not that. Please help.
