Some Kurosawa

Seven Samurai
Ran
Rashomon
Throne Of Blood
Kagemusha

François Truffaut

The 400 Blows
The Man Who Loved Women
The Last Metro
Fahrenheit 451
Jules et Jim

I've never been a big fan of Goddard, but you should try and see A Bout de Souffle.

A few more French titles you might like.

Un homme et une femme (A Man And A Woman)
Noce Blanche
Eliza
La Haine
La Fille sur le pont (Girl On The Bridge)
Nikita
L' Appât (The Bait)
Rififi
La Reine Margot

I saw that someone mentioned The Double Life Of Veronique and The Three Colours Trilogy, both of which I'd highly recommend. As I would any Kieslowski film (not that I've seen all of them.) I'd also second these films that Holden recommended:

The Lives of Others (2006)
Jean de Florette (1986)
Manon of the Spring (1986)
Babette's Feast (1987)
Man Bites Dog (1992)
City of God (2002)
Ridicule (1996)
Amélie (2001)

I've never been a big fan of Goddard, but you should try and see A Bout de Souffle.
And if you like it, you also should try the similarly themed Bande à part.

If you want a masochistic experience that takes the relationship of love/hat to a new level, the movie Week End would fit you just right. I saw it hung over and it was one of the best and worst movie experiences up to date.

Not Godard, but we can't forget La Cité des enfants perdus.

I've just looked at my post again and I'd like to say that out of these three films:
Noce Blanche
Eliza
La Fille sur le pont (Girl On The Bridge)

try and see Girl On The Bridge first. All three of these films star Vanessa Paradis and I have a bit of the thing for her which may've coloured my opinion of them. Of these, "Girl..." is usually the one that people think the best, though I don't think any of them could be considered bad films.

Another French classic for you, Les Enfants du Paradis.
