Young Guns

I could go into a big history lesson... pointing out all the things in the Lincoln County War that the film took inspiration from.

Do that for us, please. Give us a real Young Guns history lesson, with a pop quiz afterwards.

The Regulators were made up of over 60 members... but there were 11 men at the heart of the group called The Iron Clad. When The Iron Clad were joined by Lincoln residents after Tunstall's murder, only then did they became known as The Regulators...

Henry McCarty (aka William H Bonney) at the time of the War was known by the nickname Kid Antrim, not Billy The Kid.

His name Billy The Kid came from his using the name William H Bonney after the war had ended... William then moved into rustling cattle and horses to make money to live... the newpapers then picked up on this, and the fact that he was a teenager, and the fact that he had been part of the Lincoln War... and labelled him Billy The Kid, Gunslinger and Murderer... as a headline to sell more newspapers.

Billy also never lead any gang and had little to do with any decisions the Regulators actually made.

The Regulators/Iron Clad were lead by Richard Brewer then after Brewer's death, Frank McNab took over... and then Doc Scurlock.

This is the true story of events in regards to the Regulators and the Iron Clad.

The house was set afire. As the flames spread and night fell, Susan McSween was granted safe passage out of the house while the men inside continued to fight the fire. By 9 o'clock, those left inside got set to break out the back door of the burning house. Jim French went out first, followed by McCarty, Tom O'Folliard, and Jose Chavez y Chavez. The Dolan men saw the running men and opened fire, killing Harvey Morris, McSween's law partner. Some troopers moved into the back yard to take those left into custody when a close-order gunfight erupted. Alex McSween was killed, as was Seven Rivers cowboy Bob Beckwith. With McSween dead the war was over.

$750 for Doc Scurlock? $750?! When Karen Klein got almost $800,000 for just 15 minutes of bullying?!

Kiefer Sutherland portrays Doc Scurlock in Young Guns.

Recap on my last post in regards to the film...

February 18, 1878.
The death of John Tunstall sparked a conflict with another group, the Murphy/Dolan Faction, which would later be called the Lincoln County War. Tunstall was killed by Murphy/Dolan gunmen William Morton, Frank Baker, Jessie Evans and Tom Hill. The next day, Henry McCarty and Richard Brewer swear out affidavits and warrants are issued by Justice of the Peace John Wilson for the sub-posse. While trying to serve the warrants, Waite, McCarty and Constable Martinez are detained by Sheriff William Brady. Waite and McCarty miss Tunstall's funeral, Martinez would be let go. On the 23rd McCarty and Waite are let out jail.

In the film, Tunstall was an elderly man, in real life he was in his mid 20s.
He was also killed on Feb 18th 1878... the film says New Years Day 1878.

March 1st.
Richard Brewer is appointed town constable by Justice of the Peace John Wilson, McCarty is his deputy. They are to bring in Tunstall's murderers. Others are deputized and call themselves The Regulators.

This scene appeared in the film. Though the name Regulators had yet to be established.

March 6th.
The Regulators arrest Bill Morton and Frank Baker. Three days later Morton, Baker and Regulator William McCloskey are killed at Agua Negra,McCloskey is believed to have betrayed the Regulators.

This was in the film too... but the circumstances of Morton, Baker and McCloskey being killed is hazy at best... so the way it happened in the film is wrong.

April 1st.
Jim French, Frank MacNab, John Middleton, Fred Waite, Henry Brown, and Henry McCarty shoot at Sheriff Brady and his deputies through makeshift portals of the adobe wall they were behind. McCarty is wounded by Matthews while attempting to recover the rifle taken from him by Brady. Sheriff Brady and Deputy Hindman are killed.

This was in the film... though the people involved were changed due to the cast and characters of the film.

April 4th.
There is a gun battle at Blazer's Mill with Buckshot Roberts, a bounty hunter working for Dolan. Buckshot and Brewer are killed, Middleton is badly wounded, McCarty is grazed by a bullet, George Coe has his trigger finger shot off.

Also in the film... though in real life Charlie Bowdre actually fired first and hit Buckshot Roberts in the groin... the film also depicts Scurlock as being hit in the hand, not George Coe having his finger shot off.

April 18th.
McCarty, Middleton, Waite and Brown are indicted for the murder of Sheriff Brady. Dolan, Evans, Matthews and others are indicted for the murder of Tunstall.

Not seen in the film.

April 29th.
Frank McNab is killed by members of the Seven Rivers Warriors. Ab Saunders is badly wounded, and Frank Coe captured.

Not seen in the film.

April 30th.
George Coe shoots and wounds Seven Rivers member "Dutch Charlie" Kruling in Lincoln. Seven Rivers members Tom Green, Charles Marshall, Jim Patterson and John Galvin are killed that same day and although The Regulators are blamed, their involvement was never proven. Seven Rivers gang members at that time were beginning to turn on one another.

Not seen in the film.

May 15th.
The Regulators gained some revenge by storming the area around Seven Rivers, capturing and killing Manuel Segovia, the cowboy who had killed Frank McNab.

Not seen in the film.

July 15th.
The Regulators were surrounded in Lincoln at the McSween house. Facing them were the Dolan/Murphy/Seven Rivers cowboys.

Seen in the film, yet the film has a much smaller cast than what happened in real life.
In reality, instead of 5 Regulators vs 100 or so Murphy Men... it was nearer 30 Regulators vs nearer 200.
