BEWARE SPOILERS: READ WITH CAUTION PLEASE

I found it confusing why Costigan didn't just confront Sullivan when he found the "CITIZEN" envelope in his files in the office and chose to leave instead and then later asked Sullivan to meet on the rooftop for a confrontation... could it be he didn't think he would be believed by the members of the force? ... Then why did he ask the guys on the force (Brown) to back him up when he made the "citizen's arrest" on the roof top? Couldn't he have just confronted Sullivan and asked the PD to contact Wahlberg's character Dignam to confirm his identity right there in the office?

I find it comical to believe that Dignam would have left Costigan alone undercover after Queenan's death without trying to contact him.

I also don't quite see why the second mole didn't just let Sullivan take the fall for him... if he feared Costello had given them up to the FBI why bother killing off Costigan and Brown and digging a deeper hole for himself? Bit silly.

The whole "yellow envelope" exchange between Costigan and Madolyn also doesn't quite make sense, it was later never mentioned... you may elude to the fact that it could be a plot device known as a Macguffin - but that would fit if the envelope allows the plot to be somehow furthered, but it doesn't. The story would have still held if the envelope exchange scene was omitted.

I thought that the envelope would be paving way for a final TWIST provided by the Madolyn character and therefore validating the presence of the link Madolyn provided between the Costigan and Sulliven character... but the twist never came and I was left wondering why they even bothered having Madolyn link the characters in the first place, except of course for it to add another touch of irony to the plot. hmmmm...

Still a great movie, I enjoyed it - that is if I don't think too much into it... but where's the fun in that?
I'll try to answer your questions with how I saw it...

SPOILERS

Why didn't Costigan arrest/identify Sullivan at the station when he saw the "citizen" envelope?
- I think Costigan's character at this point is a little fragile and feels like he (himself) is the only one he can trust, besides Dignam, who wasn't there...I feel he believed the envelope wasn't enough to point his finger at Sullivan...he needed more proof to make the arrrest since the one entrusted to find the mole was the mole himself, so he got his hands on the tapes, and voila

Why didn't Dignam contact Costigan after Queenan's death?
- I believe Dignam didn't have any way of contacting him since he was techincally "not working" and didn't have access to his contact info which was on Queenan's cell...plus...Queenan's death, as a result of being tailed, may have Dignam too worried in the fact that he may be followed/tailed...PLUS...it should be Ellerby's job to now keep contact with Costigan

Why did the second mole attempt to team up with Sullivan?
- no idea

What is with the yellow envelope exchange?
- perhaps not explained in the movie, because it will be revealed in the sequel?????

I think the contents of the envelope were what helped lead Dignam to Sullivan's apartment…

Jack looked like he needed to steal a few bars of Irish Spring to me…

So I'm new to the forum and all, and wondered who here's seen Infernal Affairs, and what their thoughts were relative to Departed?

There's no arguing that The Departed fleshed out a lot of those themes, but since I was raised watching Cantonese movies, you kind of learn to accept the fact not everything will be explained to you.

I have not seen this yet but I no doubt want to buy it one day if I ever happen by it. Any idea if it's subtitled or dubbed in English?

My R2 copy has Chinese and English audio tracks. As dub tracks go, it's not bad but I prefer watching Infernal Affairs au naturelle... *cough*

Oh ok. I actually did check into it and for the Region 1, they do have it dubbed in Cantonese and English language tracks. It's also a 2-disc edition which is nice to know as well.

Lucky you.

Celluloid Temptation Facilitator
I was expecting better things from this movie.

I admit I may have been messed up when I saw it but I swear it took me at least half the film to realize the two younger leads were in fact two different actors and characters. Oops!

There were also two older actors that resembled each other too well for me liking.

However, near the end, with all that death it was pretty great! LMAO!

I enjoyed watching this movie since you really have to use your head, unlike other flicks that are just done for laughs. This is the modern day Godfather type of setting.

I haven't seen the original but did enjoy this version

I honestly feel that The Departed is one of the great films of our time. Everybody seems to love it, and for good reason. It is one of the greatest casts ever assembled, it's a gangster drama directed by Martin Scorsese (this says a lot on its own) and the script is justifiably Oscar-winning. I saw it four times in theaters, and it never lost its power. To me, it's impossible to explain why this is an instant classic. It's almost self-explanatory.
