It's hard to say. I'd argue that he's never really played a role that wasn't stylized in some way. Of all the roles I've seen him play, I'd say Jeffrey of
Twelve Monkeys (as you mentioned earlier), Early Grace of
Kalifornia, and Tyler Durden of
Fight Club have been his best roles in terms of character consistency and cohesion. They're believable enough because he holds them together (not so with
Troy,
Spy Game, and others) - which is ironic, because of the three I mentioned, Tyler Durden isn't even supposed to be real.
It seems like his characters are always either
extremely flamboyant,
extremely eccentric, or
extremely pensive (and nothing inbetween). I'd like to see the man take on more well-written, low-key roles.
It's funny, though - I read an article recently in which the author wanted to see the very same thing, only she made the point that Brad Pitt has one major drawback in that respect: he's just too pretty.
