Titanic had a budget of $200 million. The gross, $1.800 million, is 9 times the budget. The Blair Witch Project had a budget around $35.000 and had in november 1999 grossed $140,5 million - in USA alone (all according to IMDb). That is 4000 times the budget. So which of these two films has been the most successful?

Ummm....didn't My Big Fat greek Wedding beat out Blair Witch, in terms of more profit?

Possible. I'm not saying The Blair Witch Project is the most profitable movie ever made. I was using it as an example of how profit or success can be measured in more than one way and that the list with all those blockbusters is more a list of very smart investments rather than the ten best movies ever made. Or the most daring or the most visionairy. It would be interesting to see a list of the ten most successful movies ever made in terms of making the largest profit in relation to the initial budget though. That or a list based on the numbers of tickets sold, but I think someone posted a list like that here a while back, no?

Interesting. 8 of those 10 films are sequels or prequels. It says a lot about the business today.

Hope away! Perhaps prequels was a bad choice of words. "Parts or episodes of a series of films". And that's what all those eight films are. To be honest, I don't really understand your post either, even though it was meant to me.

To clarify: You said that sequels and prequels. When FOTR, Sorceror's Stone are not prequels, but the original films.

TTT and ROTK are continuing one story, where as the "sequels" are doing another story...ie shrek 2 and what not.

The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi continue the same story, as well. Are they not sequels? What about Halloween II, which picks up exactly where Halloween left off, on the same night, continuing the same story.... Is it not a sequel?

From a commercial point of view that's totally irrelevant. The point is that these films are parts of series, that were meant to be series from the start (except for Jurassic Park perhaps). It's very profitable for the movie companies to make several blockbusters from one single idea, which the list is proof of, and that's the trend these days. Which, as I wanted to point out, is interesting.

I'm suprised that my first thread has actually survived a year. Hooray!

Oooo, do i see what i think is in that list???
