I Need Your Help with the 2010s

Tools

Although I've gotten better at catching films from the past (such as The Maltese Falcon, Blade Runner and the original Thomas Crown Affair this year alone), the recent past has proven more elusive. With the upcoming 2010s rankdown coming around the corner, I wanna be ready (or at least aware of some titles I don't get to so I don't get dumbfounded when they show up).

I do have a list ready so if the deadline was tomorrow, I'd be OK submitting it. But I do feel like it's lacking in some ways...and that's where I'll need your help.

I'm going to start by listing the titles I've already seen so we can hopefully save some time. On my next post will be what I am looking for and what things you could probably pass on sending.

What I'm looking for:
Good quality films that I might have missed (either Oscar worthy or films that should have been so)
Subtitles are fine: As you can see, I'm fine with checking out foreign films from anywhere and everywhere.
Documentaries are fine (within limits): Interesting topics/people will be worth my time.
Comedies: I guess it doesn't matter if it's clean or raunchy...the key is can it tickle my funny bone?
For any other genre, feel free to toss in what you want.
If you got some hidden gems that I'm missing, I'm all ears and eyes.

What I'm not looking for:
Documentaries that manipulate or are as exciting to watch as paint dry won't be.
Torture porn horror films (Anything stronger than the original Martyrs will be turned down)
If it's about rich people and their problems, it'll start with one strike out of 3. Sorry, I don't make the rules (oh wait, I do).
Li'l Quinquin: I don't like the looks of that one. Plus, the running time is a bit intimidating.

What I'm working with:
Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Tubi, Freevee and other free to watch services in the US.

Bonus points if it hits the 2022 missing list items:
Oscar Winner
Modernist Novel Adaption
South Korean film
Turkish film
Gangster Film
Sound Editing Oscar nominee

I like that some of these titles I hadn't heard of. Maybe I find an interesting gem in here?

Will keep the original Secret in mind sometime in 2023.

Thanks for your help.

Meek's Cutoff

Margin Call
Mad Max: Fury Road
Blue Jay
Colossal
Phantom Thread

I've seen Margin Call earlier this year. Thanks for the recommendation for the 2022 list. It was pretty good.

I do see some I would love to get to (Phantom Thread, Fury Road) before the deadline. Just have to see if it's somewhere I can get it.

Thanks for your help!

I thought The Act of Killing was good so I'll have to bump up Look of Silence.
Another hand for The Lighthouse, Fury Road, The Lobster and Anomalisa. Yeah, the more I get recommended for a title, the more likely I'll prioritize it higher. PS: The Burning might be just what I'm looking for on the 2022 list.

Thanks for your help!

Just FYI Phantom Thread is currently on Netflix. My favorite PTA, for what it's worth.

An update:

I've downloaded the following for this:
Manchester by the Sea
The Double
Blue Jay
Shirkers
The Phantom Thread

In addition, I got these other titles I'd like to get through:
Endless Love (2014)
Dracula Untold (2014)
Mio on the Shore (2019)
You're Not You (2014)
Noah (2014)
The Love Punch (2014)
Tickled (2016)

I'll update this as I get through the titles and feel free to continue to offer suggestions.

I appreciate everyone for the support/help. I do see myself going through several of these titles during the countdown itself and giving them reviews. Obviously, I can't say whether they made my list or not until the final reveal.

But I can see myself hitting through some of these titles as I recover from a bad cold.

Here we go:

Blue Jay (2016) [Thanks GBGoodies for catching the error]

Two middle aged people (Sarah Paulson, Mark Duplass) meet in the middle of a grocery store for the first time in about 20 years or so. She's there to visit her pregnant sister and he's there to clean up the house that belonged to his recently deceased mother. In the course of the day, they reconnect as they start to remember things about their relationship such as favorite types of jellybeans and the nickname they gave to the store clerk. But has time changed things for the two of them?

The dialogue feels natural and fairly realistic (surprising to learn it was improvised). The two leads share a legitimate chemistry. In particular, Sarah Paulson is good as she goes through a full range of emotions in the course of the day.

I felt like there were some jarring shifts between the lighter tone of the first hour or so and the heavier tone of the last half hour. And the film did feel a bit predictable by the end of what was going to happen.

I found it to be a solid film and I'm glad that someone recommended it to me.

I'm glad you liked Blue Jay. @kgaard recommended it to me in my 2010s recommendations thread, and it's one of my new favorite movies. I hope it makes the countdown.

Mio on the Shore (2019)

A note: this is one of the films on my 2022 List. Specifically, my plan was to eschew the fantastical, the historic in favor of the mundane, modern life of these countries.

This might have been a bit too slight for my tastes.

When her grandmother is sent to a nursing home and forced to leave her Japanese inn behind, Mio is sent from her small hometown to Tokyo in search of a new job. After a job at a grocery store doesn't work out, she starts helping her father's friend with his bathhouse proving to be good at the task. But what happens when she learns that the shopping center she works in is being shut down in favor of Progress?

There are some nice shots by director Ryutaro Nakagawa such as a scene where she puts her hand in some clean bathhouse water and splashes it up and a sequence set at an Ethiopian restaurant. It does feel like there are important things to say about moving on and embracing change.

I just wish they did more with Mio. Too often she fades into the background or becomes a symbol for what the film is trying to do. By the end, we don't know much more about her than we did going in. Considering that the film is supposedly centered around her character, it's frustrating waiting for the film to catch up to that fact.

At the end, it was a slow burn that was alright. But I did want more.
