I've never liked The Producers that much. But I'm putting this one on me. On paper it's brilliant. And I adore Wilder. And I subscribe to the "Mel Brooks is a Genius" newsletter. Yet, I always struggle with it. I do have faith that one day it will click with me. So my dislike is entirely my fault.

Wayne's World, on the other hand, I'm blaming entirely on the movie. I loathe it. Mike Myers is garbage (although, I'll admit to having a very tiny soft spot for the first Austin Powers movie).

This low for The Producers?!?

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

It was my #1.

Were you financially invested in it coming in lower?

And I'm now disappointed that your entire list wasn't porn.

Watched three Brooks in preparation for this list. Producers was one of those. I’m just not n the same wave length as Brooks. His jokes to laugh ratio is way down below the Mendoza line for me in every movie I have seen.

I rewatched Wayne’s World with my son. I thought there was an outside shot it could make my list but no chance. Like all SNL skits, I enjoyed it way way more in short form. Still enjoyed it, but I believe this is a mofo nostalgia pick. Wayne’s World is not a good movie. Nothing wrong with that, I have a couple of those picks myself.

There are Brooks films that make me laugh more, but I consider The Producers to be his "best" "movie", if you know what I mean.

In the same way that Annie Hall is a "better" "movie" than Bananas, say, even if it's not "funnier".

I realize all of this is arbitrary, but it makes sense in my head.

I've seen neither #81 nor #82.

I remember the advertising of Wayne's World back then. We immediately classified it a movie to skip.

I definitely get what your saying, in the way that I think Young Frankenstein is a better movie than Blazing Saddles. But I think Blazing Saddles is the funnier of the two.

I do think Annie Hall is funnier than Bananas though. Even though Bananas is obviously the straight comedy there (for me, his funniest strict comedy of his is Love and Death, and it isn't even close)

I don't think seen enough porno comedies from different directors that I've liked for a full list, so I just stuck with my one-pointer.

I think a lot of the humour of The Producers comes from its total commitment to depicting these two loser characters in all their pathetic glory. It might not have as many laughs per minute as, say, Blazing Saddles (his next best movie, IMO), but few things have made me laugh as hard as Zero Mostel yelling "I'm wearing a cardboard belt!" or revealing what he means by "al fresco".

The Producers was nominated for two Academy Awards. It won Best Original Screenplay for Mel Brooks, over such competition as Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, John Cassavetes' Faces, and Gillo Pontecorvo's The Battle of Algiers. Gene Wilder lost Best Supporting Actor to Jack Albertson, who would a few years later co-star with Wilder in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, for reprising his Tony-winning Broadway role in The Subject was Roses.... It wound up as the only acting nomination in Wilder's career. His only other Academy nom came when he and Mel were nominated for Adapted Screenplay for Young Frankenstein, losing to The Godfather Part II.

Right. Over the years it's become the one I'm most likely to put on when I'm in the mood for Brooks.

"FLAUNT IT BABY!!!!"

Bright light. Bright light. Uh oh.
The Producers is a hilarious comedy with awesome performances by everybody, but especially Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder. Terrific writing by Brooks in his directorial debut, and Dick Shawn is crazy throughout. "Springtime for Hitler" is probably the most famous scene, but this is my favorite.

Wayne's World is sporadically funny. Besides the leads, there are plenty of other funny guys and there are quite a few sexy women. i think it was probably better on SNL.

I should see The Producers again but I remember not caring for it. A shame because I love Wilder.

I'm sure I've seen Wayne's World but maybe not properly so I don't even consider it watched.

I've only seen one of those last 6.

I like Jack Benny...his slow burn when he debates between his money and his life, "I'm thinking, I'm thinking". Impeccable timing. So yeah, I should see To Be or Not to Be.

I've heard of One, Two Three largely because I have a movie review book in my bathroom when I need to go. Looks like fun. And yes, I'm becoming a Billy Wilder fan.

When Harry Met Sally is probably among my favorite romcoms...one of my least favorite genres. Perhaps it's that Crystal and Meg Ryan give good performances. Or that their characters actually seem intelligent and likeable. Or thanks to Nora Ephron's script, it glides over the few plotholes with sharp insight and crisp dialogue. This is clearly one case of I'll have what she's Having that I'm on board with.

Meant to see the Gold Rush last year on the 2021 list. I did see one Chaplin short a few years ago and liked it. So I'm overdue for more.

Only saw the remake of The Producers. It was bad, although there were a few delightful moments there (Uma!) and I guess I don't have to see the Broadway version now. Haven't seen the original one and yes, 1960s-1970s Brooks was on fire, so it looks like I'll have to take the shot.

Yes, I've never seen Wayne's World. The product placement scene looks clever. Then again, the only SNL film that worked for me was The Blues Brothers. And I think they sorely missed Belushi because the long overdue sequel was bad.

On the plus side, I was just reviewing my list and yeah, I had Clueless as an honorable mention! So off we go!

My List:

HM: Clueless

I honestly haven't had much to say about any of the films revealed since I commented on Evil Dead II. Of the 12 that have made the Countdown in the meantime, I've only seen 7.

The only one I considered for my list was The Producers, but it was an early cut. I really loved the film the first time I saw it, but parts of it really dragged on subsequent viewings. "Springtime for Hitler" does however remain disturbingly catchy to this day haha.

Seen: 12/20

My List: 1

04. Evil Dead II (1987) - #93

The Producers was pretty funny at times, but it was Springtime for Hitler that stole the show. 7/10.

Wayne's World has more instances of cartoons brilliance for a movie based on a TV skit, and the leads are flawless, including Tia Carrera. 9/10.

Seen 13/20.

The only 2 Mel Brooks movies I'm a fan of are his 2 biggies, but they're also the only 2 I've seen more than once.

Wayne's World wasn't a favorite of mine back in the day but I liked it. Don't know if I would now.
