Victim of The Night
October 22nd - I Married a Monster From Outer Space (1958)
5. A horror film that is a complete sentence

I Married a Monster From Outer Space sounds like something cheap, dumb and easy to watch. Holy hell was I shocked at how much I loved this movie. It is as scary, imaginative and thought provoking as the more popular sci-fi films of this era. Last year the best find I had was I am a Teenage Werewolf and this is his followup and this guy just gets it.

So the plot is Aliens come to a remote town and start to take over the men, the female lead Marge figures out that her new husband is actually a monster from outer space. The FX for the film are fantastic for the time and frankly they hold up really well. The director takes an extra step with every scene but they also cut 90% of the exposition which allows the film to run for a little over an hour.

I was blown away by how much I enjoyed the film, and when the story dips into horror they do it very well. You can see some Invasion of the Body Snatchers in it...but they definitely improve on aspects of it.

I liked this one a good bit myself. Cheers.

I thought this was a lot more fun than it had any business being because Peterson is just so utterly committed to the whole thing she actually manages to carry it for as long as it goes on and the rest of the cast seemed game to go with her. Enjoyable show.
Hello!)you are absolutely right, i think so too

I think I actually rated it 2.5/5 so I pretty much agree (I think my 2.5 is easily someone else's 3).

3 to me is still something that I consider fairly good. It's once you get down to 2 that I start having real issues.

Who are you guys?
I mean, do you even like Horror, bro?

If I didn't like horror, I wouldn't have liked it at all.

It has a couple of interesting scenes in it, some decent performances and the concept is good. But as a film it is incredibly flat. A little lifeless. A stronger presence behind the camera would have allowed its stranger ideas to resonate more, but as is, they all just come off as kind of silly. It's hardly surprising that the director turns out to have mostly done work in television. It reads that way.

I really disliked it the first time I watched it. I gave it a second go a couple of years ago, and recognized that as a story it is compelling. As a film though....a lot of meh. It's the kind of movie where I would probably be more entertained by it just having someone tell me what happens.

I haven't even seen Vampire Circus.

I think anyone who is a big fan of Hammer is going to like this (even if Robert Young hardly sniffs the heels of someone like Terrence Fischer). I'm very hit and miss with these films though. The original Frankenstein and Dracula entries are both pretty great. And I like a few of their less iconic Devil worship stuff (Plague of Zombies, Devil Rides Out). But I find a number of their more respected films a little...I don't know....stodgy? They frequently look great but they just don't move.

And I feel the opposite.
I feel like it's full of energy, right from the start and then especially once the circus comes to town. Violent energy, sexual energy, and freakin' vampire shape-shifter crazy dwarf energy to boot. This isn't a movie I sit through it's a movie I get excited for, every time. And I've seen it 5 or 6 times now. It played great to friends (who are Horror fans) last year as well, they said it was a new "gem" for them.

I prefer Vampire Circus to both Horror Of Dracula and Curse Of Frankenstein. Well, I prefer it to all other Hammer. And I love Hammer.
