Internet Forum Culture

...
It is very interesting to me to compare the handful of movie forums. They each develop personalities, norms, mores, etc. They're pretty damn addictive, too. I check up on all of them multiple times each day to see if there's some kind of notification or new threads.
I thought this was the only one...

BBSes or bulletin boards. Dial-up modems were used then, but for some reason real names were usually used in forums.
...
Yeah, that's how I started back in '94 I think Bulletin Board Services were all I knew about-- even after the web started containing private websites and forums. The BBSs were pretty limited, so when the web started opening up it became a smorgasbord... and away we went!

i miss the old school windows 95 ugh

i ****ing don't because computers back then were slow and garbage, but yes i wish that windows 10 had a more realistic version of that theme, with the chunky 16-bit lettering, that would be awesome!

Totally agree. Plus, I also wish we could still play older games made for earlier versions of Windows. Not cool that there are a ton of classic computer games I own, even on CDs or DVDs, that no longer work in Win10, even with various types of emulations and workarounds. Pffft.

But I DO like that there are far more forums and wikis and walkthroughs for games than there were back then too. Because I give up easily.

there are work arounds for that, however this is why so many people do console gaming: operating systems must change overtime due to the changing nature of hardware. I haven't had any luck with virtual machines as far as games go.

There are still some people i think on Ebay who sell 90's windows machines for a few hundred dollars.

Hubby is a bit of a computer hoarder so we actually have working older Windows machines right here in our house. I just don't keep them hooked up to anything. We have CPUs on the third floor older than at least one of my grown kids.

The only console I own is an early Nintendo Wii, which I still use on rare occasions. I get most of my games on Steam now anyway. There's really only ONE game that IRKS me because it's never been updated and I can't play it without dragging out and setting up an old computer: Obsidian. LOVED that game, never finished it.

Gosh, now I might have to drag down one of those older computers and install that game again. (I have it on multiple CDs here.) I don't think it ever had a console edition.

@CringeFest, you might be interested in the forum rules. https://www.movieforums.com/community/rules.php

Someone asked me if you did something wrong. No! You mentioned in an earlier post something about rules so I thought you might like to see the rules here.

I'm aware that theres a problem with links to download content, but just let you know, there are lots of free versions of the old windows floating around the web. But don't expect much, the simplicity and antique value are cool but they had lots of issues. The FAT file systems were cumbersome and slow...I personally recommend linux overall, I'm never going to buy another copy of windows again personally unless I need it for work.

You're my new favorite MoFo! Linux Mint user myself.

Sorry if I'm rude but I'm right
Some real older-timers here! My first PC already had Windows XP - a brand new system back then! I do remember Windows 95, though - we had these at school. I registered at my first forum back in 2005. I've been a member of several since then. In hindsight, MoFo is the best of them all.

About the Twitter vs. forums fight, I prefer forums because Twitter cuts down your messages to a laughably small number of characters. Conversations are extremely uncomfy because the reply system is not meant for real multi-people discussions. However, there is one thing that makes Twitter superior to MoFo. I can post kinky pictures and bear no consequences!

Lol, thanks. I'm currently dual booting Ubuntu and Windows 10, i was messing around with linux a few years ago but some issue with the graphics driver caused it to crash. I was having the same issue with it again this time around on my desktop but i figured out how to install the proprietary drivers which was satisfying...

Why are you using linux mint in particular?

Yeah, twitter is great in the sense that you can have a porn account...there's gotta be some people on here who were using the internet in the commodore 64 days, but i guess they are the supreme nerds lol.

To zoomers a typical message board is not something they would be inclined to use given that they grew up with the smart phones and tablets.

Good question and it has to do with this thread, sort of. I originally installed a Linux distro called Chalet, which looked a lot like Windows 7 and that was what I was using at the time, so that's why I went with it. Then I found out Chalet had been abandoned and was no longer being updated and it's community help was none existent. I mean I went to their help board and nobody was literally there. So I went with Mint, as like MoFo it has a very friendly & helpful discussion board and being based off of Ubuntu and there forth Debian, there's a ton of help topics on the internet. I found it totally easy to use from the get go.

Well, I've been using computers since before Windows was a thing (MS-DOS, anyone?), and although I've worked with Macs at jobs, I still am an avowed Windows/PC person. I have no desire to fiddle with Linux.

I wouldn't need to re-download earlier versions of Windows. They're still on those older computers on our third floor. Last I checked (maybe a year ago), the one with Windows 3.1 still worked all right (though, wow, slowwwww!). I could still play most of the DOS-based games and Obsidian on that one. Might have to just set it back up in the guest room with a spare monitor.

Back then (to bring this back around to the main topic), the internet forum culture for me was CompuServe on that green monitor. Love the LitForum there and also WitSIG. Those were the days (in the late 1980s).

I don't have a porn account. I have one account for everything, so when my followers choose to follow me for film screenshots and cute Asian girl pics they also have to bear some kinky from time to time.

Yeah, the thing is i'm only 31 but my dad was so into DOS when it came out, and we played cyberia a little bit, such a wierd game!

We've got dos box on the ubuntu app store, but i mostly installed this to improve my programming skills as i've found its the best operating system for that. I'm such a dabbler...

That time, even Win 3.1 wasn't popular yet, so some used programs like DesQView to attempt multitasking.
