You can't make a rainbow without a little rain.
Indeed. Tomorrow's clue:

Made in Japan.

I'm going to assume that this hint is not as easy as it seems, and try a different approach to this clue.

Gone with the Wind (1939)
Rebecca (1940)

These may sound like crazy guesses, but you guys will be impressed if even one of them turns out to be right.

Indeed. Tomorrow's clue:

Made in Japan.
I'll go with:
Casino
Yojimbo

2022 Mofo Fantasy Football Champ
I hope Spirited Away is much higher up the list, so with that in mind I'll hazard a guess at:

Howl's Moving Castle
Sonatine
Unfortunately Spirited is probably the only Miyazaki making it. Hope I'm wrong though!

A little late getting to the results here but I'll just say, Great job, Yoda and Usual Suspect! Some nice picks so far. Loving it!

We used to have that.

You may not be shocked to learn it caused some tumult. But then, so did removing it.

Don't start a website, is what I'm saying.
I remember those days! Are all stats from that gone, as in how much negative rep we all had?

2022 Mofo Fantasy Football Champ
Made in Nippon huh? clearly, one of them shouldn't be lost in translation. I hope.

I think it's so early for that Miyazaki one, which I pretty confidence will improve its rank on this iteration. or is it another one of him? or Takahata finally gets appreciation? Satoshi Kon? maybe Otomo's Akira-- which clearly have a big fanbase in the west.
While another Kurosawa chance to have a much higher position than Ikiru, but films by Ozu, Mizoguchi, and let alone Naruse will never get represented by Mofos in general, pessimistically. The same with the new wave.
Kitano I think, will lose this one or improve.

Too broad of a clue if not another literal trick. That being said, my fail-diction stand for :
Masaki Kobayashi's Harakiri (1962)
and seeing the early pattern with Suspiria and rosemary baby, cuz, why not
Nobuhiko Ōbayashi's House (1977)
I'm fully on board with Hausu making it, but I would doubt that happening

This thread is, unsurprisingly, flying through the pages here and it's super hard to keep up if you don't check in often. So yeah, been away for the past many entries... so here are a little update for me:

96. The Searchers (71 points) - I plan on rewatching this, but I did not like it on first watch. In general there's something about John Ford that just is not my cup of tea at all. I really don't seem to like the way he makes movies. But I'm not done exploring him, both new and old watches...

95. Ikiru (72 points) - I tried watching this and got a good chunk of it seen but I was never much interested in what was going on. It was very slow, as I remember it, but the idea sounds good so I want to revisit it some time and actually watch it all.

94. Her (73 points) - first one from my list. I love this film. It's definitely one of my all time favorites. Love the world building, the acting and the style of it.

93. Braveheart (73 points) - only seen this once but I loved it back then. I definitely wanna revisit this too. Having only seen it once is part of why I wasn't sure of putting it on my list. Don't know if I would either way, but it's definitely a classic epic film.

92. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (74 points) - not on my list but a brilliant and creative little film.

91. Rosemary's Baby (75 points) - not on my list either but could easily have been. One of the greatest horror films of all time imo.

90. Harold and Maude (75 points) - not seen this one, but it's on my watchlist.
89. 89. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (75 points) - an absolute family classic! Not on my list, but I love the film for sure.

So far this is looking to be a very fascinating list. Well, it's no surprised this is gonna be a packed and tight list. So far there's some true heavy hitters early on. Looking forward to more!

yeah, I doubt that happening for Hausu, but it's fun to mention it. Early I thought I have false consensus it has a certain cult among ppl here, and maybe I'm just wrong: https://www.movieforums.com/movies/25623-house.html
I've yet to see a certain, peculiar Obayashi's disciple assess this assessment.

Now because of the humble dai Nippon bait by Yoda, I can't help myself to extend my fail-diction.
Rest assured, I don't want to ruin the experience.
WARNING: spoilers below
Sion's Sono Love Exposure: well I think it has the cult, but I'm not sure it'll get enough votes.
Shinkai's Your Name : an overrated title that surely can't be diminished.
Kore-eda's Still Walking: merely a hope. I never think any kore-eda will get enough fans favorite votes here.

Seen both a long time ago. Like them as well, but would never consider them for a top list.

I would like to watch Harold and Maude again some time in the future. It's a film I haven't thought about for a long while, but it's quite a unique picture when you think of it. And Cat Steven's music is of course very memorable.

11/12 seen
1/25 from my list (+ my one pointer)

Just a curiosity question here, but may have been explained earlier. The named films in Post #2 of this thread, has some films with the same scores. What places one higher than another. Or am I one toke over the line?
First tiebreaker is how many lists the film is on, second tiebreaker is which has the highest placement on any list.

  • 5 lists

I GOT A PREDICTION RIGHT!

Also, Akira was my #17...

My List

Two fun things about the hint and people's guesses. The first is that I told my wife the clue and she came shockingly close: she said "an Akira and Toy Story." She meant an Akira Kurosawa film, unfortunately, but still, my jaw fell open for a moment.

The second is that Skepsis was so close, yet so far away:

Or maybe Tokyo Story
Two characters away (that's why I listed this second).
