A Song For October

Tools

Round 13

1. Amyl and the Sniffers - Some Mutts (Can't Be Muzzled)
(A recent YouTube suggestion -- possibly influenced by this tournament -- that I'm very grateful I clicked on. I probably listened to this song two dozen times over the weekend. Raw, unadulterated energy transplanted from a 70's underground punk bunker into the present. Spit-in-your-face, white-trash attitude, with a Susan George lookalike doing her Iggy Pop strut on a foundation of dirty guitar riffs. I think I'm in love.)
2. Meg Myers - Lemon Eyes
3. Billie Holiday - Strange Fruit
4. The Sound - I Can't Escape Myself
5. Clint Black - Untanglin' My Mind
6. Johannes Brahms - Cello Sonata No. 1 in E minor, III. Allegro
7. Weedeater - It Is What It Is
8. Eddie Vedder - Society
9. Cradle of Filth - Dusk and Her Embrace
10. Costello ft. 4Real - Chill D F**k Out
11. Prince of Egypt - Deliver Us

I missed that someone chose John Carpenter's Halloween theme.

Ffs. I didn't want to duplicate something. Waited till last for this one, too.

Round 14

1. John Carpenter - Halloween Theme
(Without this iconic theme -- perhaps the greatest in any horror movie -- I don't think Halloween would have made anywhere near the impact. I'm not even a big fan of the movie yet this theme immediately makes me want to watch it.)

2. Guns N' Roses - November Rain
(That moment when Slash exits the church in the middle of nowhere to start soloing with the helicopter blowing his hair everywhere is still the coolest moment in any music video. It also makes me happy to see the insane amount of views (1.5 billion!). I feel like I've listened to this song almost as many times. Fortunately for the nominator, I never tire of GNR.)

3. Brotha Lynch Hung - Meat Cleaver
(It's almost Halloween, so of course I had to dump some blood and guts onto the tournament, and my favorite rapper and cannibalistic chef, who "keeps more meat than they keep at Costco," is a perfect source of lyrical gruesomeness with a flow as hard as a hammer to the cranium. Reheat that sh*t then repeat that sh*t.)

4. Bob Dylan - Spanish Boots of Spanish Leather
(I mean, you could've just added them to your Amazon wish list, but I appreciate you taking the time to pen us a song, Mr. Dylan. Do you want those boots giftwrapped?)

5. Megadeth - Peace Sells . . . But Who's Buying?
(Not a big fan of the band, but this song is killer.)

6.The Mutton Birds - In My Room
(Pleasant and familiar sounding even though it's a first-time listen.)

7. The Raconteurs - These Stones Will Shout
(I'm weirdly apathetic about much of the Raconteurs' output, despite loving The White Stripes, The Dead Weather and Jack White's solo stuff. I like this song okay, but not enough to want to hear it again.)

8. Louis Prima - Sing, Sing, Sing (With a Swing)
(Pretty much the definition of swing music, or at least the only definition with which I'm familiar.)

9. Chakra - Tokyo Suite
(Musically adventurous. Didn't need it to be 8+ minutes, however.)

10. Irwin Goodman - El tippa tapa
(I like the way it sounds. Just wish I had a translator.)

11. Secret Chiefs 3 - Personae: Halloween
(This would've probably fared better if I hadn't just listened to the original. Now it just sounds like someone botching perfection.)

I really enjoyed this round. Such an eclectic group of songs.

01: Guns N Roses - November Rain
02: Irwin Goodman - Ei tippa tapa
03: The Mutton Birds - In My Room
04: John Carpenter - Halloween Theme

There's a bit clumsy translation available. It's doesn't seem like the translator was fully proficient in English (it's sort of convoluted and especially the first verse misses the original's tone somewhat) but it's good enough to get the idea.
