Note from Yoda's Wife

Only "bad" news is that the swelling could take weeks or months to go down, which is a little surprising, but still not a huge problem. All in all, could have been a lot worse, long-term, even though it was pretty awful in the short-term.
Swelling would most likely decrease if you frequently put an ice pack on it for 20 minutes at a time. A little tedious, but works so well. At first it seems like it isn’t working, but then, suddenly, it does.

I was doing a fair bit of that the first week, though to no clear effect (not even pain reduction, weirdly). Anyway, this apparently is more fluid and scar tissue as opposed to the usual rush-of-blood stuff. They made it sound like it's just gonna be awhile no matter what, but specifically told me to wrap it overnight with Coban bandages.

Are you feeling better now?

Yeah, a lot better. The nerve stretching stuff is pretty uncomfortable but it sounds like it's normal and as long as I don't overdo it, not too bad. The first week was the tough part, the first few days in particular, but after those first few days I stopped taking the pain medication entirely and it hasn't been too bad.

Never heard of these. What are they?
Just a bandage that has this little grippy texture and "self-adheres" so you don't need any tape:

They showed me how to wrap it before I left, seems easy, and it doesn't cost much. I was impressed throughout all this by how much better a lot of the little things like this are, compared to when I was younger. They have this moist yellow bandage thing you put on the wound before covering it with gauze that stops it from getting "stuck" on the wound so you have to hurt yourself pulling it off later. Tiny thing, but really helpful.

That does sound good. I am currently very fond of Bandaids that contain antibiotic lotion so one doesn’t have to buy a tube of the stuff.

Have you seen your neighbors & their pooch lately?

Yes and no. I haven't seen the lady (or her son, as it's "his" dog) for a bit. I've seen the dog, though, he's still on the porch sometimes, and they're just two doors down so he's seen us walking to the car, and even walking my dog since. We obviously go the other way down the street and try to minimize the time they might notice each other, but it's still pretty unnerving.

Next time I see her I'll have to bring up both the medical costs (if any part of this isn't covered), and ask if they know how he got loose. If they just failed to latch the gate or something, fair enough, maybe just being careful about that going forward is enough. If not, then they really need too make sure he's tied up somehow even with that gate there, when he's on the porch.

I don't think they actually have any sense of how bad the injury was and might not be taking things sufficiently seriously as a result. We'll see.

They have no sense of it since they have not made any effort to find out. (She did give you an orchid.) If it were me, I would have made you a courtesy visit to ascertain the situation. Hoping that things weren’t too bad, but prepared to accept responsibility. They’re obviously hoping this will all go away.

Yeah, they definitely should have reached out more, and obviously should have broached the awkward subject so I don't have to later.

That said, we do have our doorbell disconnected (long story), so I guess it's possible they tried, but I highly doubt it. And yes, I think they're just sort of hoping it wasn't too bad, and there's somehow no associated cost (which I guess is plausible depending on our coverage?). Which I can understand, it probably feels awful to be responsible for something like that. But you've gotta do it anyway because it's the right thing to do.

Amusingly we got a visit (and a gift basket) from the lady who helped us when all this happened. I think we ruined one of her towels, even, while waiting for the ambulance. We were sure to return the favor with some flowers and a gift card.

Usually I prefer a direct approach but part of me thinks, if they're not going to make this as easy on me as possible, it should be enough that I just tape a letter to their door and ask them to call me. Normally I'd find that kinda lame, face-to-face is better, but in this case I've had to go through a lot of stuff already and I shouldn't have to do any of this, so I might make an exception.

Wow, how very nice. Is she a neighbor too?

This seems reasonable to me. And, if you get no response, then you definitely know where you stand with them.

Yeah, she’s just around the corner. We've talked before and she was the nearest when we were yelling for help.

Who called the police? I was thinking what I would do in this circumstance & not sure I would think of doing this in the heat of the moment.

A lady who used to live opposite once let her horrid yappy overweight little mutt bite my ankle. What alarmed me was that he drew blood. Luckily she was able to produce a current rabies certificate so that was the end of the matter. IIRC, other neighbors who had gathered wanted me to call the police, but I saw no reason to escalate the situation.

Not criticizing you. Just gathering info in case your situation ever happens to me since there are loads of dogs (some off-leash) on my street.

Who called the police?
Someone else that I didn't recognize and haven't had the occasion to ask since. Cops arrived first, though (we're just a block or two from the station).

But yeah, I had/have no desire to press any charges or get anyone in trouble. I don't want them to lose their dog, and I don't really blame the dog (and if it was taken away for biting someone, as a pit bull, its life is effectively over, if not literally over). It's possible the cops just drove by (I see them around a lot), or just hear about local 911 calls, or maybe the lady called the cops and they called for the ambulance. Not sure. When asked I told people to call 911 or "an ambulance," though, if I'm remembering correctly. Definitely wouldn't have thought to tell anyone to call the police.

... they called for the ambulance.
It will be interesting to see how much is charged for the ambulance. I’ve heard crazy prices from various people over the years.

Apparently without insurance it's something around $700.

Coming your way.

You can't make a rainbow without a little rain.
Stitches just came out, talked to the specialist about the recovery. Got almost entirely good news: should get back to normal, healing well, movement suggests no tendon or nerve damage, and the issues I'm still having are perfectly normal and don't suggest any long-term problems.

Only "bad" news is that the swelling could take weeks or months to go down, which is a little surprising, but still not a huge problem. All in all, could have been a lot worse, long-term, even though it was pretty awful in the short-term.

That's great news!
