But Frank Burns is like the person you love to hate. He was awesome on the show, but not a nice character.
He totally RULED on that show! Always a riot.

Similar to how Apu always cracked me up reliably.

They'll say "I don't care if he's a poet or cowboy, so long as he's a nice guy. But oh, I'm so attracted to that bad guy over there."
Understand this last part, and you'll get them all.

I hope Alvin Kersh from The X-Files makes the list. Good Lord, he was the most grating character EVER. All the time he would just be a cog in the wheels for Mulder and Scully, and always go by the books, even when it was extremely ineffective. Constantly with that same snarly attitude. And he lasted for over 4 seasons! It was kinda cool to see him in the revival, but only because I think James Jr. Pickens does a great job. I wouldn't have liked if he got an active role again.

Oh, and Dana Walsh in 24. The show had its fair share of ass-holes and dumbasses, but she was the worst one. As much as I liked season 8, her "evil boyfriend" storyline was unneccessary, and she was poorly written as a character (she's unlikable before the twist reveal). The way Katee Sackhoff played her was also grating, making those stupid faces all the time.

I did not watch The X Files or 24, so neither of those characters will be on this list.

49.

Bunny McDougall, Sex and the City

Frances Sternhagen did Emmy-worthy work playing the ultimate mother-in-law from hell. Bunny was the uber wealthy patriarch who did everything she could to keep Charlotte (Kristin Davis) away from her son, Trey (Kent MacLachlan).

48.

Dave Karofsy, Glee

Max Adler was very good in what turned out to be a very complex role. Karofsky was a football player who led the team in hurling homophobic slurs (as well as multi-flavored "slushies") at the gay members of the glee club, spewing particularly nasty venom at Kurt (Chris Colfer). We were supposed to feel sympathetic when it was soon revealed that Karofsky was in the closet himself, turning to Kurt to help him deal with it. After everything he put Kurt through, the sympathy boat had sailed on this guy.

And she ultimately failed. Loved the scenes when Charlotte renegotiated her “worth” with Bunny.

47.

Keith Faber, Roseanne

He only appeared on a few episodes, but this guy was a real ass****. Faber (played by the late Fred Dalton Thompson) was the supervisor at Roseanne's first job at Wellman's Plastics during the first season. He was a sexist blowhard who loved to refer to his female employees as "honey" while making them work until they dropped. A dispute with Faber over factory quotas finally motivated Roseanne to quit. Crystal, Jackie, Vonda and two other employees followed suit.

46.

Nick Tortelli, Cheers

My first exposure to a versatile actor named Dan Hedaya was this totally reprehensible character. Nick was the ex-husband of waitress Carla (Rhea Perlman) who took no responsibility for his eight kids but was not above crawling to his ex-wife for money. Nick was a pig. He looked like he bathed about once a month. Nick eventually remarried to a statuesque blonde named Loretta (Jean Kasem) and they were actually spun off into their own short-lived sitcom called The Tortellis.

Ghouls, vampires, werewolves... let's party.

I liked her in Misery, and she occasionally played Cliff's mother in Cheers.

45.

George Williams, Desperate Housewives

Roger Bart, one of our industry's most versatile actors, created one of prime time's most despicable characters. George was a pharmacist who became obsessed with his favorite customer, Bree Van DeKamp (Marcia Cross). George didn't care that Bree was married but when she started coming to George for her husband Rex's medications, George decided to methodically murder Rex by tampering with his medication. After Rex died, George moved in on Bree but when it came to light what George did, rather than live without Bree or pay for his crime, George opted to commit suicide. I don't recall a more welcome suicide on a television show. This guy was slime.

44.

Sally Weaver, Seinfeld

Comedienne Kathy Griffin brought this truly obnoxious character to life. Sally was a struggling standup comedienne who Jerry thinks is terrible and suggests behind her back that she quit the business. Sally gets wind of what Jerry said and decides to incorporate his insensitivity into her act, referring to Jerry as "the devil." Putting Jerry into her act turns her into a smash and the more Jerry tries to get her to stop using him in her act, she just uses it as fuel for her new found success. This witch pretended to be a victim of Jerry's alleged evil, but she was a manipulative shrew who knew exactly what she was doing.

43.

Svetlana, Shameless

Isidora Goreshter played a Russian prostitute who came to Chicago's East side initially as part of an illegal sex ring and then tried to break up the relationship between Mickey (Noel Fisher) and Ian (Cameron Monaghan) and then came between Kev (Steve Howie) and Vanessa (Shanola Hampton) having sex with both of them and blackmailing them into selling her a percentage of their bar. Svetlana was pure evil wrapped up in a big block of solid ice.

If you ask me, this was a case of a comedienne channeling herself into her character.
Kathy Griffin has apparently always been obnoxious and probably always will be.
She's kind of done similar things in real life as she did to Seinfeld on the show (only much worse).

I didn't know she had done similar things in real life, though I've never been a big follower of Griffin, I'm not surprised.

42.

Dr. Kimberly Shaw, Melrose Place

Marcia Cross did some brilliant work on this show playing a manipulative doctor who becomes obsessed with Dr. Michael Mancini (Thomas Calabro). Unfortunately, what we thought was just sexual obsession turned out to be much more as Kimberly was revealed to be stone cold insane.

41.

Schneider, One Day at a Time

This character was extremely popular, but it doesn't change the fact that he made my skin crawl. Schneider was the superintendent of the building where divorcee Ann Romano (the late Bonnie Franklin) lived with her two daughters (Mackenzie Phillips, Valerie Bertinelli). Schneider thought he was God's gift to women and convinced himself that Ann haad the hots for him. He would enter their apartment without knocking and was constantly offering Ann unsolicited advice on the care and feeding of her daughters, despite the fact that he was a single guy who knew nothing about raising children. It didn't help that he looked like a 70's porn star.

40.

Sophie Kachinsky, Two Broke Girls

I've always loved Jennifer Coolidge in the movies ever since she played Stifler's mother, but this character was cheap, vulgar, and pointless.

You can't make a rainbow without a little rain.

I forgot all about this guy. I hated him.

Nick Tortelli was scum. I never understood what Carla (or Loretta) saw in him.
