Martin Scorsese's The Irishman

We've gone on holiday by mistake
WARNING: "plot" spoilers below
One thing I kept thinking was what the hell happened around 1980? Everytime a character got a text wall next to them regarding their fate it was "shot 1980","shot 1981" etc, and there was loads of them, seems the entire upper echelon featured in this film were shot dead or imprisoned within a very short period.

I liked it. I felt there was something great in here when it ended.

Yet still... I can't help but see a lot of problems with it. A lot of things makes me want to disslike it... but this is a gigantic film. I have no way of taking it all in after one watch (which I had to split up into two days, unfortunately).

And man did I wish Scorsese had used old school make-up. I trusted him when I heard he wanted to do the digital de-aging but it was distracting, especially in the start. I watched it in 4K/Dolby Vision and at least for me the effects were clear as day. And that first scene with a young De Niro driving a truck felt like a cut to a video game scene. Like no exaggeration. Those little scenes that are in video games where the graphics are better than the actual game but it's still clearly a video game. Impressive as hell for a video game... here, not so much.

It got better as it went along (well, clearly also because the de-aging was most extreme during the early days) but it didn't quite work for me. But again, later on in the film I could better adapt to it.

And why is everyone so crazy about Al "I shout a lot" Pacino? The cast all did good, also Pacino, but this ain't no performance of the year. It's of course okay for some to think that, but I believe a lot are likely to hail the actors more so than the peformances and get the two a little too mixed up.

The truth is in here
Nah, I genuinely really loved his performance. It's rare, but Pacino hasn't been great in every movie. Most of the time however he knocks it out of the park even in his weakest movies.

Agree with De Niro driving the truck, looked so unnatural like he's playing musical statues or something. The one shot shopkeeper beating wasn't good. Performances were good from the trio though

I found it, and uploaded it. Check it out now before my account is terminated. (and they don't indicate what is allowed, only audio)

Jimmy Hoffa on The Dick Cavett Show

Why would your account be terminated?

YouTube doesn't say what is allowed when it comes to video. With audio though, they will.

I just want people to see this. The movie might not have been so bad if they would have spend time researching Jimmy Hoffa.

I never worry about whether or OT my review falls in line with critics. I’ve seen plenty of critical darling that fell flat for me.
Gandhi, Fargo, A History of Violence, Walk the Line, the Big Chill, Rocky are all examples of films I felt were not enjoyable.
Reviews are subjective afterall
You're entitled to your opinion, but Fargo, A History of Violence, and ROCKY not enjoyable?? Come on, man! Fargo is sheer entertainment (eye candy even). Funny, dark, violent. It's one of Coen Brothers best films.
A History of Violence I only watched once but I remember really enjoying it. Viggo's performance was captivating.
Rocky is the greatest movie ever made. So much heart. So much grit. The greatest underdog tale ever told.

As for The Irishman, it is not Scorsese's best...far from it. But it is a great mob film. I've watched it twice so far, and it got better the second time around. I feel that if the film was made back in the 90's, right after Casino, minus the de-aging effects, it would have been much more powerful.

I know, but hey, I’ve watched them more then a few times and I just didn’t enjoy them.
For me, Rockys best part was watching Weathers as Apollo Creed. Should have been nominated for an Oscar over Burt Young

Weathers was terrific as Apollo Creed. I agree he should have been nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar, not instead of but along with Burt Young. Weathers stole every scene he was in, and his delivery of the perfectly written dialogue by Stallone was on the same level of brilliance as Samuel Jackson's delivery of Tarantino's dialogue in all of the movies on which they both worked together.

I just can't see what you did not enjoy about Rocky, though

Because stripping away any screentime from Al Pacino's powerhouse performance would be a horrible mistake. His scenes were the most entertaining and memorable in the whole movie.

This movie was made for De Niro, Pesci and Pacino. Why wouldn't you want to use them as much as possible? I actually favor the deaging technique in this case since that gave us a chance to see more of them, not to mention it was pretty seamlessly done.
I mean it was a "hoo ha" performance but still I really liked Pacino in this, he did actually sell the drama of the character and brought a kind of impish unpredictability to scenes the rest of the film was badly lacking. De Niro and Pesci weren't bad but they didn't really have much to work with by comparison.

It is a bit ironic that after all the negative talk about Marvel this film to me seemed like it suffered from some quiet cynical audience targeting. Trying to revisit Goodfellas/Casino when really there was a much better film to be made about Hoffa.

I didn’t find Stallones performance to be well done, and the romance between him and Talia Shire was, to me, devoid of any chemistry. And the story itself wasn’t really great. It’s just one of those films that didn’t connect with me.
And Burt Young wasn’t very good either. Didn’t find his performance to be very impressive compared to Weathers and Burgess Meredith

Rocky is the greatest movie ever made.
And you really believe this?

I don’t criticize people for their opinions on films, so if someone thinks Rocky is the best film ever made, then so be it. Neither will I condescend their choices, with a few notable exceptions of course. 😏
I mean, if this was about how great Friday the 13th sequels are I’d have to give that person a certain hard time hahaha.
Seriously though, as long as someone is capable of actually having an informed opinion on said film, that’s all I expect, no matter how much I might disagree.
